Albany, NY – OPENING BILLBOARD & EDUCATION HEADLINES - Glenn Busby (2:00)

COLLEGE CUTS PRICE BY 10%
Part One: The Economic Climate and the Decision Making Process -

Well, as the old saying goes, especially around this time of year, nothing is quite as certain as death and taxes. Add the yearly rise in college tuition to that.

But earlier this year, the University of the South announced that its cutting total student costs (tuition, fees, and room and board) by 10%. That is a whopping 46-hundred dollars in savings, which represents one of the more dramatic shifts in higher education money policy announced by a competitive private college in recent years.

We obviously had lots of questions about how they could afford to do this, and what prompted them to make this abrupt about face. So we went directly to the source on campus.

Glenn Busby reports. (13:14)

*Programming Note*
Next week, we will also talk about these following topics in higher education:
How lowering prices may impact access.
Will this make Sewanee more competitive in the marketplace?
Are they cutting expenses to help finance the reduced revenue?
What's the potential impact Washington may have in the areas of Pell Grants and for-profit colleges?
Plus, what is the future of higher education?
All that's next week. Please don't miss it!

SCHOOL LABOR-MANAGEMENT CONFAB, BY INVITE ONLY -

As you've probably heard, and we've reported on this program, teachers' unions in many states are feeling the heat from an emboldened political climate. An economic climate which has revenues down, and some collective bargaining rights being reduced.

But at the same time, the U.S. Education Department is trying to encourage labor-management harmony in public schools.

Regular listeners to this show may recall a few weeks ago we told you about a school reform confab planned in Denver. Now we have some first-person accounts of what occurred.

Paul Tuthill reports. (3:11)

This week's Academic Minute professor discusses why students dealing with dyslexia often turn to art as a means of expression.

The Academic Minute is hosted by Dr. Lynn Pasquerella, a celebrated philosopher and medical ethicist, and President of Mount Holyoke College. (2:30)
