The city of North Adams, with 13,000 residents in the Northwestern corner of Massachusetts, has closed municipal offices today, and is preparing for the three-week ban on all on-site service in state restaurants and bars that starts tomorrow. North Adams Mayor Tom Bernard spoke today with WAMC about how schoolchildren will receive the food they rely on while public schools are closed for three weeks, and more.

Garnering almost 1,800 of the 2,100 votes cast in Tuesday’s North Adams, Massachusetts mayoral election, Tom Bernard has coasted to a second term over challenger Rachel Branch. Bernard spoke today with WAMC about the victory, and what he hopes to accomplish in his next two years at the helm of Northern Berkshire County’s largest community.

On Tuesday, the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams held its Spring Opening Breakfast. 

The mayor of North Adams is beginning the second year of his term.

North Adams Mayor Tom Bernard is near one year in office. The former Smith College Director of Special Projects says it will be a busy fall in Massachusetts’ smallest city. Bernard spoke with WAMC about a variety of issues facing the city, including its relationship with embattled cable giant Charter Spectrum.

North Adams, Massachusetts has its first new mayor in almost a decade. After his 2017 election victory, Tom Bernard took office in January — just around the time skydiving business owner and convicted rapist Alex Kelly’s bid to lease space at the North Adams airport began to make waves at the city’s airport commission meetings. In the wake of the controversy surrounding Kelly’s involvement with the public airport — which culminated in the city leasing him space at June’s commission meeting —  residents have raised questions about management of the facility and the city’s role in shaping the decision-making around it. The commission is due to meet again on Tuesday. In a conversation with WAMC Landes, Mayor Bernard says one of his first moves regarding the airport was to install two new members to its commission: Dean Bullett and Mark Morandi.
