The North Adams, Massachusetts fire chief is retiring at the end of January.

Mayor Tom Bernard says Chief Steve Meranti will retire after 33 years with the city.

“He’s also served as our emergency management director for the city and has done tremendous work there," Bernard told WAMC. "He was a big part of the city’s response to Hurricanes Sandy and Irene. When the tower on the mountain, the communication tower went down, he was the incident commander for that. And he has just been right there with our emergency operations team running the COVID-19 response.”

Bernard says the search for his replacement will begin in December.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
