With tolls frozen on the Mario Cuomo Bridge through 2020, New York state Senator David Carlucci is growing anxious about what an increase could look like thereafter. He is pushing for the Thruway Authority to come to the table for toll discussions this year and wants to see resident discounts.

At 10:52 Tuesday morning, a large portion of the old Tappan Zee Bridge became history in seconds. The bridge, an iconic lower Hudson Valley crossing that opened in 1955 connecting Westchester and Rockland Counties, was replaced by the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge.

A controversial, heated campaign in New York’s 19th congressional district was the talk of the town in 2018. And environmental sagas, including over Newburgh’s PFOS water contamination, continued. But there was plenty else grabbing attention in the region. WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne looks back.

Earlier this month, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo unveiled animation of a bicycle and pedestrian path on the Mario Cuomo Bridge. The shared use path is a work in progress. Mayors of the villages at each end of the Tappan Zee replacement say while they look forward to the path’s opening next year, they still have some concerns.

Both spans are now open on the Mario Cuomo Bridge that connects Rockland and Westchester Counties. As road signs are being switched to reflect the new name, debate continues over discarding the old one. State lawmakers near the bridge say their constituents want to integrate the old name with the new, despite New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s apparent final word on the topic.

After a delay, the eastbound span of the 3.1-mile Mario Cuomo Bridge is set to open Tuesday night, weather permitting. This comes after a setback Friday, hours after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo held a grand opening ceremony for the span’s public debut. Cuomo’s gubernatorial opponents are calling for outside investigations into the timing of it all.

UPDATE 9/8/18:  Authorities have delayed the opening of the second span of the Mario Cuomo Bridge, reportedly prompted by fears that the old Tappan Zee Bridge was in danger of collapse. Boat traffic was halted beneath the span.

New York State Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew Driscoll issued a statement Saturday morning:

"In continued disassembly of the old Tappan Zee Bridge last night, a potentially dangerous situation developed where a piece of the old bridge has become destabilized and could fall. Given its proximity to the new completed span, out of an abundance of caution, motorists will remain in the current traffic configuration until a thorough evaluation by Tappan Zee Constructors is complete."

The second and final span of the replacement Tappan Zee Bridge is set to open Saturday. The Tappan Zee is well on its way to being fully dismantled, and the new Mario Cuomo Bridge has been carrying traffic on the westbound span that opened about a year ago. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says the new bridge is set to reach a major milestone this weekend.

There’s an effort under way to re-establish oyster populations in the lower Hudson River. This comes in the wake of the dismantling of the Tappan Zee Bridge and construction of the replacement Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. Over the summer, structures to encourage the growth of oyster reef habitats were placed in more than five acres of the river, near the bridge. WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne spoke with Katie Mosher. She’s the director of restoration of the Billion Oyster Project, which worked on the habitat.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday announced that the restoration of oyster reef habitats near the Mario Cuomo Bridge in the lower Hudson Valley has been completed.

Two Democratic state lawmakers from the Hudson Valley are calling on the Thruway Authority to cancel its contract extension with the company that operates New York’s cashless tolling system. They say the company’s operation at the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge has resulted in residents being charged unreasonable penalties and fines.

Last-ditch efforts are under way to add “Tappan Zee” to the name of the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge.  Bills in the Assembly and Senate are backed by nearly 110,000 petition signatures, though the measures are not very far along in the legislative process and the session ends next week.

The 62-year-old Tappan Zee Bridge was officially retired in October. And there was a milestone reached this week in its dismantling. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo led a boat tour with reporters Tuesday to talk about that milestone and how the pieces from the old bridge will be put to use.

A state lawmaker from the Hudson Valley has crafted a bill to revert the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge to its original name. The Putnam County Republican says the new bridge should contain the words “Tappan Zee,” and any name change should go through a different legislative process.
