An environmental group in the Hudson Valley has released a study on the risks of oil spills in the Hudson River. Scenic Hudson commissioned the study that looks at threats at nine locations between Yonkers and Albany.

A coalition of environmental and municipal officials stood in a park overlooking the Saranac River and a rail trestle this morning. They announced a new effort to convince federal representatives from New York and Vermont to ban crude oil transport in order to protect Lake Champlain and the Hudson River.

Government officials Wednesday announced that the City of Albany has received a foam trailer from the State Office of Fire Prevention and Control.

Concern over the potential impacts of the proposed Pilgrim crude oil and gas pipelines has prompted 58 towns, cities, and counties in New York and New Jersey to go on record opposing the project, with the majority of New York towns and counties challenging the New York State Thruway Authority’s intention to be the lead agency overseeing an environmental review for the pipeline.

In the latest chapter of a long-simmering dispute, Albany County has taken two separate legal actions against so-called oil trains. The county executive says the intent is to protect residents' health and safety.

Environmental groups from New York and Vermont met at a wildlife management area adjacent to a rail line today to release a report detailing the threats of tar sands oil transport through the region. As WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley reports, environmentalists say new response plans issued by New York State this week are only a start.

Senator Charles Schumer is introducing legislation that would require crude oil to be transported in studier tanker rail cars within two years, instead of later deadlines included in federal regulations announced last week. The New York Democrat says upstate communities the oil trains pass through, including Albany — a major hub for shipments — remain at risk for explosions and contamination from derailments.

There is concern about transporting volatile crude oil by rail across New York. Members of the Clinton County Oil Train Task Force gathered near a rail crossing in downtown Plattsburgh on Earth Day to highlight resolutions passed by local municipalities calling for policies to improve the safety of the trains carrying oil through the region.
