2017 Massachusetts budget

  One of the items that did not make it to the final version of the $40 billion state budget approved a week late by the Massachusetts legislature was a high-speed rail study.  Specifically, a requirement that MassDOT do a report on the costs and benefits of linking Springfield and Boston via high-speed rail.


Advocates for children in Massachusetts are looking to rally the business community to back additional state funding for early education.  At a conference in Springfield today they pointed to recent momentum on Beacon Hill toward the goal of universal pre-kindergarten. 

  The Massachusetts House is scheduled to begin debate on the state budget today with more than 1,200 amendments to consider.  Despite the large number of amendments, the House leadership intends to keep the process on track to produce a final state budget by an end of June deadline. 


The budget outlook in Massachusetts is growing darker. Economic uncertainty, including the recent vote by the United Kingdom to leave the European Union is having a ripple effect on Beacon Hill.


A coalition of organizations that provide services to the homeless in Massachusetts is asking the state legislature to increase funding for emergency shelters. Advocates also point to a funding disparity that they say shortchanges homeless shelters in western Massachusetts.

Friends of the Homeless in Springfield, the largest shelter facility for individuals outside Boston, sees over 1,000 men and women come through its doors each year, or about 150 per night, looking for a meal and a bed to sleep in.
