LOCAL COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Men’s Scores:

UAlbany was defeated by Louisville 70 to 68.

Georgia State topped UMass 71 to 63.

Memphis beat Siena 70 to 66.

And on the Women’s side:

Kansas beat Iona 72 to 58.

Several local women’s teams will play this afternoon. Siena will take on Hartford at 11:00 a.m.,

Marist will play UMass at 12:00 p.m., and UAlbany will take on Northern Illinois at 1:00 p.m.

NBA SCHEDULE

Kelly Olynyk scored a career-high 32 points in his rousing return to Boston, and the undermanned Miami Heat hung on Wednesday for a 90-89 victory over the Celtics.

On a night when the Celtics honored their former forward in his first game back, the popular Olynyk received a standing ovation from Boston fans and led the Heat, now 16-15, to another win against the top team in the Eastern Conference. Josh Richardson had 19 points and six assists for Miami, which took two of three in the season series. The Heat ended Boston's 16-game winning streak earlier this season with a victory at home.

Other NBA final scores:

— Karl-Anthony Towns had 25 points and 10 rebounds, Jimmy Butler also scored 25 and the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Denver Nuggets 112-104. Jamal Crawford added 20 points and seven assists off the bench for the Timberwolves, who rallied from 14 down to end Denver's eight-game home winning streak.

— Klay Thompson scored 27 of his 29 points in the first half and made his first nine field goals, leading the undermanned Golden State Warriors past the Memphis Grizzlies 97-84 for their 10th straight win. Kevin Durant added 22 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots. Golden State was down five regulars again, including two-time MVP Stephen Curry out for his sixth straight game with a sprained right ankle.

— Austin Rivers scored 21 points, DeAndre Jordan grabbed 20 rebounds and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Phoenix Suns 108-94 to end a three-game skid. Back home from a 1-4 road trip, the injury-depleted Clippers had lost seven of 10 before leading all the way against a young Phoenix team that has its own injury woes.

— LaMarcus Aldridge scored 22 points, Pau Gasol had 20 points and a season-high 17 rebounds, and the San Antonio Spurs beat the Portland Trail Blazers 93-91. Aldridge hit 10 of 17 shots against his former team.

— DeMar DeRozan scored 18 of his 28 points after halftime and the Toronto Raptors overcame a slow start to beat the Charlotte Hornets 129-111 for their fourth straight win. Serge Ibaka scored 15 of his 24 points in the first half for Toronto, and OG Anunoby shot 6 of 7 from beyond the arc while scoring 20 points. Toronto has won 10 of 11 and is in third place in the Eastern Conference. The Hornets lost for the 11th time in 13 games.

— Victor Oladipo scored 23 points, Myles Turner had 20 and the Indiana Pacers beat the Atlanta Hawks 105-95. Bojan Bogdanovic had 19 points as Indiana won for the second time in five games. The Pacers rallied from a sluggish start to shoot 48.8 percent. Atlanta has yet to win consecutive games this season and dropped to 7-24.

— George Hill scored 22 points, Zach Randolph added 21 and the Sacramento Kings completed their first back-to-back sweep of the season by beating the Brooklyn Nets 104-99. The Kings got off to a sizzling start following their victory in Philadelphia a night earlier, then held on after Brooklyn cut a 21-point lead to two with just over a minute to play.

— Denzel Valentine had 16 points and 10 rebounds, Nikola Mirotic had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and the Chicago Bulls beat the Orlando Magic 112-94 for their seventh straight win. The Bulls had lost 10 straight with Mirotic out of the lineup prior to his return Dec. 8, and they haven't lost since to improve to 10-20. Nikola Vucevic scored 18 points for Orlando, which lost its sixth in a row.

— Russell Westbrook had 24 points and 10 rebounds to help the Oklahoma City Thunder roll past the Utah Jazz 107-79. Westbrook made 10 of 13 shots and had seven assists and four steals. Oklahoma City has won eight of 11 after a rough start to the season. The Thunder are 16-15 and above .500 for the first time since early November. Paul George scored 10 of his 18 points in the third quarter and Carmelo Anthony also scored 18 for Oklahoma City.

— Rookie Kyle Kuzma set career highs with 38 points and seven 3-pointers, and the Los Angeles Lakers overcame 51 points from James Harden to end the Houston Rockets' 14-game winning streak with a 122-116 victory. It was Houston's first loss since Nov. 14 and snapped a three-game skid for the Lakers. The game was tied before Los Angeles scored 10 straight points — while Houston missed seven shots in a row — to go up 110-100 with about four minutes left.

— Harrison Barnes scored 25 points, rookie Dennis Smith Jr. had 15 points and five assists in his return from a hip injury and the Dallas Mavericks beat the Detroit Pistons 110-93. The Mavericks, last in the Western Conference, won for just the second time in eight games while ending a three-game Detroit winning streak that followed seven straight losses by the Pistons. Anthony Tolliver led Detroit with a season-high 18 points.

TOP 25 COLLEGE BASKETBALL SCHEDULE

Freshman Wendell Carter Jr. scored a season-best 27 points, and No. 4 Duke routed Evansville 104-40.

Marvin Bagley III added 18 points and Grayson Allen finished with 16 to help the Blue Devils bounce back from their lone loss with one of their best defensive performances of the season.

Duke forced 21 turnovers and turned them into 39 points.

In other Top 25 college basketball finals:

— Fletcher Magee scored 27 points to help Wofford stun No. 5 North Carolina 79-75, snapping the reigning national champion's 23-game home winning streak. The Terriers led the entire second half and by as many as 14 points before holding off UNC's late-game run for a huge road win.

— Teddy Allen scored a career-high 24 and grabbed nine rebounds and No. 10 West Virginia beat Coppin State 77-38. The Mountaineers struggled in the first 10 minutes of the game, shooting 5 of 23 over the first 13 minutes. Allen then led West Virginia to a 15-1 run to close the first half to take a 42-18 lead over the winless Eagles.

— Khadeen Carrington scored 26 points and Angel Delgado added 15 points and 10 rebounds, leading No. 23 Seton Hall to an 89-68 victory over Wagner on Wednesday night at the Prudential Center. The win enabled the Pirates, now 10-2, to get back on track after falling to state rival Rutgers last Saturday.

— Manu Lecomte scored 22 points and No. 18 Baylor won its fifth straight, 80-60 over Southern. Baylor went on a 13-0 run in the first half to pull away, then had an 11-2 spurt after Southern cut its lead to 46-40 midway through the second half.

— Marcus Foster scored 16 points and No. 25 Creighton shot nearly 70 percent during a 58-point first half to beat USC Upstate 116-62. Foster made 6 of 7 shots two nights after scoring a season-high 32 points against UT Arlington.

— Grant Williams scored a tiebreaking basket with 54 seconds left as No. 21 Tennessee outlasted Furman 66-61 to snap the Paladins' five-game winning streak. Furman was seeking its first win over a Southeastern Conference team since a 91-75 home victory over South Carolina on Dec. 21, 2010.

NHL SCHEDULE

Seth Jones had a goal an assist, and Joonas Korpisalo made 39 shots to help the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 on Wednesday night.

Lukas Sedlak, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Alexander Wennberg also scored for the Blue Jackets, who never trailed in snapping a two-game losing streak. They moved them into tie for second place in a traffic jam of teams battling for the top spot in tough Metropolitan Division.

— Sean Couturier scored off his own rebound to snap a tie early in the third period and the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 on Wednesday night for their seventh victory in eight games. Robert Hagg added his first NHL goal, Dale Weise and Wayne Simmonds also scored for Philadelphia.

In other NHL news:

— Detroit Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader has been fined $5,000 by the NHL for spearing New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield in Tuesday night's game. The incident occurred in the first period of the Red Wings' 6-3 win over the Islanders. The fine is the highest allowed under NHL rules.

— Dougie Hamilton broke a tie at 7:57 of the third period and Calgary beat St. Louis 2-1. The Blues have lost four of five.

NFL NEWS

Quarterback Cam Newton says embattled Panthers owner Jerry Richardson should be considered innocent until proven guilty.

Richardson is under investigation by the NFL for sexual and racial misconduct in the workplace. He has announced that he's selling the team.

The quarterback says while he disagrees with any type of sexual misconduct, he has immense respect for Richardson based on their 7 ½-year relationship. He says "everything that I've heard were allegations, and nothing was actually proven."

— NFL Network executive David Eaton has resigned amid complaints about a hostile work environment for female employees — and a history of sexually explicit conversations on Twitter. The 53-year-old Eaton was in charge of news operations at the television channel and NFL.com.

— The Chicago Bears have placed linebacker Pernell McPhee on injured reserve. McPhee will miss the final two games this season. The Bears have 15 players on IR.

— Miami Dolphins tight end Julius Thomas and guard Jermon Bushrod have been placed on injured reserve and will miss the final two games of the season.

— Tampa Bay rookie tight end O.J. Howard and four other players have been placed on injured reserve and will miss the final two games of the season.

— Tennessee cornerback Logan Ryan missed practice as he heals from an ankle injury that knocked him out of the Titans' previous game, and backup cornerback LeShaun Sims hurt a hamstring in practice on Wednesday, needing an MRI. Coach Mike Mularkey says Ryan remains day to day along with defensive lineman Karl Klug with an injured groin.

— The Los Angeles Rams placed kicker Greg Zuerlein, who leads the NFL in scoring this season with 158 points, on injured reserve Wednesday. Zuerlein has been dealing with a lingering back injury all season.

MLB News

The San Francisco Giants have acquired infielder Evan Longoria and cash from the Tampa Bay Rays for outfielder Denard Span, infielder Christian Arroyo and two minor league pitchers.

The 32-year-old Longoria leaves Tampa as the longest-tenured player in franchise history, after spending nearly 10 seasons in a Rays uniform. He is the club's all-time leader with 1,435 games played, 261 home runs and 892 RBIs.

Arroyo is the Rays' No. 1-ranked prospect. Tampa also is sending right-hander Stephen Woods and left-hander Matt Krook to San Francisco.

— A person familiar with negotiations says the Washington Nationals have agreed to terms in principle on a $4 million, one-year contract with first baseman Matt Adams, pending a successful physical. The 29-year-old figures to replace Adam Lind, who became a free agent after the National declined to exercise a 2018 option in his contract, Adams hit .274 last season with 20 home runs and 65 RBIs with the St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves.

— Orioles closer Zach Britton ruptured his right Achilles tendon in offseason training, a significant injury that could cause him to miss part of the 2018 season. Britton was injured Tuesday while training in California and wished him a speedy recovery. Britton had 15 saves and a 2.89 ERA this past season.

— Reliever Juan Nicasio has finalized a $17 million, two-year contract with the Mariners that gives Seattle another hard-throwing arm out of its bullpen.

— Pitcher Tom Koehler and the Los Angeles Dodgers finalized a $2 million, one-year contract, a deal that raises next year's projected luxury tax payroll of the NL champions to $183 million. Koehler split last season between Miami and Toronto.

— Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has been given a contract extension. The length of his new deal was not specified.

COLLLEGE FOOTBALL EARLY SIGNING PERIOD

The traditional National Signing Day is in early February but it has taken a major hit.

Under a policy that took effect this year, high school seniors could sign letters of intent during an early signing period that began Wednesday and runs through Friday. The vast majority decided they didn't want to wait to pick their schools: Of the nation's top 25 prospects, according to a composite ranking of recruiting sites compiled by 247Sports, only a handful are delaying their decisions to February.

Clemson signed two of the nation's top three prospects in quarterback Trevor Lawrence and defensive end Xavier Thomas. The top previously uncommitted player to announce his decision Wednesday was defensive end Micah Parsons, who chose Penn State.

— Byron Cowart, a former five-star recruit at Auburn, is transferring to Maryland and is expected to be eligible next season. The defensive lineman was among the 22 players Maryland signed Wednesday.

— No. 14 Notre Dame has indefinitely suspended wide receiver Kevin Stepherson and running back C.J. Holmes from football-related activities. WNDU-TV reports that the two men were caught shoplifting clothing from a department store Friday night. They have not yet been charged or booked into jail.

NBA PLAYER KILLED

The ex-wife of former NBA player Lorenzen Wright is fighting authorities' attempt to extradite her from California to Tennessee, where she's charged with killing him in 2010.

Sherra Wright appeared briefly in court Wednesday. The judge told to return for a hearing Jan. 8.

VENUS WILLIAMS-CRASH

Florida police say no charges will be filed against tennis star Venus Williams or the other driver for their crash last June that killed a man.

A Palm Beach Gardens police report has cleared Williams and Linda Barson in the June 9 accident that fatally injured Barson's 78-year-old husband, Jerome.

But Barson's estate is suing Williams.
