GOLD CUP:

The United States men's soccer team has earned its sixth CONCACAF Gold Cup title and first since 2013.

Jordan Morris scored in the 88th minute to give the Americans a 2-1 win over Jamaica in the final at Santa Clara, Calif. Jozy Altidore's goal on a 28-yard free kick in the 45th minute opened the scoring, but the U.S. needed Morris' 14-foot blast to extend its unbeaten streak to 14 games under coach Bruce Arena.

MLB:

Chris Sale improved to 13-4 and Rafael Devers banged out his first big league homer as the Red Sox ended a four-game losing streak, 4-0 in Seattle. Sale recorded double-digit strikeouts for the 14th time this season, finishing with 11 while scattering three hits over seven innings. Sandy Leon added a two-run homer for Boston, which still leads the AL East by one game over the Yankees.

Didi Gregorius and Todd Frazier homered for the Yankees in a 9-5 win that completes a two-game sweep of the Reds. It was Frazier's first homer since joining the Yanks last week, and helped Luis Severino improve to 7-4. Severino struck out nine and allowed just a pair of unearned runs and three hits over seven innings.

Manuel Margot hit a two-run homer and Luis Torrens added a two-run triple that put the Padres ahead 6-1 in the third inning of a 6-3 triumph over the Mets. Jhoulys Chacin allowed two runs and four hits over 5 1/3 to get his 10th win. Losing pitcher Steven Matz was tagged for all six San Diego runs and nine hits over just three innings, raising his ERA to 5.51.

The defending World Series champs are back atop the National League Central following their 10th win in 12 games since the All-Star break.

Anthony Rizzo went 3-for-4 with four RBIs as the Cubs thumped the White Sox, 8-3. The Cubs led just 1-0 in the fifth until Rizzo lined a three-run double.

Addison Russell added a ninth-inning homer and Jake Arrieta pitched two-hit ball into the seventh as the Cubbies moved a half-game ahead of Milwaukee.

The Brewers gave the Cubs an opening by dropping an 8-5 decision to the Nationals in Washington. Milwaukee led 2-1 until the Nats erupted for seven runs in the eighth inning. Ryan Zimmerman and Adam Lind each hit two-run doubles in the eighth, one inning after Daniel Murphy's home run ended Jimmy Nelson's shutout bid.

Gio Gonzalez gained a no-decision but was sharp for the Nats as he limited the Brewers to two runs and five hits while striking out nine over seven innings.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— The Rays knocked off the Baltimore Orioles, 5-1 to stay 2 ½ games behind the Red Sox. Evan Longoria belted a two-run homer that put the Rays ahead 2-1 in the sixth, one inning before Steven Souza Jr. added a solo blast. Alex Cobb limited the Birds to a run and four hits with six strikeouts over seven innings.

— The Indians rolled to their sixth straight win as rookie Bradley Zimmer hit a solo homer and doubled home the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning of a 10-4 win over the Angels. Yan Gomes and Erik Gonzalez each had two hits and two RBIs as Cleveland kept its 1 1/2-game lead over the Royals in the AL Central. The Tribe took command with a seven-run eighth and moved a season-high nine games over .500.

Whit Merrifield, Lorenzo Cain and Mike Moustakas each had three of the Royals' 22 hits to back Ian Kennedy, who held Detroit to a run and three hits over six innings. Alcides (al-SEE'-dehs) Escobar and Drew Butera drove in two runs apiece to help the Royals match their highest-scoring output of the season, also against Detroit last Thursday.

— The Dodgers erased a 5-0 deficit and beat the Twins, 6-5 on Justin Turner's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. Joc Pederson and Yasiel Puig got the Dodgers going with solo homers and Chase Utley added a two-run double before Logan Forsythe tied it with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Los Angeles picked up its fifth straight win and kept its 12 ½-game lead over Arizona in the NL West, while the Twins fell 5 ½ games off the AL Central lead.

— Cameron Rupp blasted a pair of two-run homers and Maikel Franco added a two-run blast as the Phillies ripped the Astros, 9-0. Aaron Nola was reached for just four hits while striking out 10 over six shutout innings. It was Houston's third shutout loss of the season and the first in 68 games for the AL West leaders since May 20.

— J.D. Martinez homered twice and the Diamondbacks took the rubber match of their three-game series with Atlanta by crushing the Braves, 10-3. Arizona took control with a four-run third as Ketel Marte provided a two-run, inside-the-park homer and Daniel Descalso tripled home a pair.

— Paul DeJong belted a two-run homer and Randal Grichuk had a career-high four hits as the Cardinals trounced the Rockies, 10-5 to complete a three-game sweep. DeJong has homered 14 times in only 49 games since his recall. Carlos Martinez picked up his first victory since June 16 despite yielding five runs and seven hits over six frames.

— Marlins leadoff hitter Dee Gordon set the tone by slamming a first-pitch homer from Yu Darvish in a 22-10 dismantling of the Rangers. Giancarlo Stanton cracked his major league-leading 33rd home run for Miami, which also got round-trippers from Christiah Yelich and J.T. Realmuto. Rangers first baseman Adrian Beltre homered and two doubles to close within four of the 3,000-hit mark before he was ejected by plate umpire Gerry Davis.

— Justin Smoak and Kendrys Morales hit back-to-back homers in the bottom of the ninth to carry the Blue Jays past the Athletics, 3-2. Morales ended it with a solo blast after Smoak knotted the score with his 28th home run, a two-run shot off Santiago Casilla. Marcus Semien slammed a two-run homer for Oakland.

— The Giants pulled out a 2-1 win over the Pirates on Brandon Belt's RBI double in the seventh. Jeff Samardzija won for the first time since July 2 by limiting Pittsburgh to a run and four hits over seven innings. Adam Frazier doubled home a run for the Pirates, who have dropped four of five since a six-game winning streak.

Houston Astros fans can expect to see Dallas Keuchel on the mound Friday at Detroit. The 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner has not pitched since June 2 due to a neck injury that sent him to the disabled list for the second time this year. He was 9-0 with a 1.67 ERA in 11 starts this season. Keuchel allowed one run over eight innings in minor league injury rehabilitation starts.

In other baseball news:

— The Nationals have placed Stephen Strasburg on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to Monday. Strasburg left Sunday's start after two innings with pain in his forearm that doctors later diagnosed as a nerve impingement.

— The Cubs have designated Brett Anderson for assignment, dropping the lefty the same day he came off the 60-day disabled list. Anderson was 2-2 with a hefty 8.18 ERA in six starts before landing on the DL with a lower back strain.

— The White Sox could spend a couple of weeks without outfielder Avisail Garcia after he was diagnosed with a strained right thumb ligament. Garcia underwent an MRI Wednesday after complaining about the thumb injury following an 0-for-5 performance in Tuesday's 7-2 loss to the Cubs.

— The Rockies have obtained right-hander Pat Neshek from the Phillies for minor league pitchers J.D. Hammer and Alejandro Requena, along with infield prospect Jose Gomez. The 36-year-old Neshek is a two-time All-Star and was 3-2 with a 1.12 ERA in 43 relief appearances for Philadelphia.

— The Brewers have acquired reliever Anthony Swarzak in a trade with the White Sox. The White Sox received minor league outfield prospect Ryan Cordell for the 31-year-old Swarzak, who is 4-3 with a career-low 2.23 ERA in 41 games this year.

NBA:

The Washington Wizards have announced the signing of guard John Wall to a four-year, $170 million extension that begins in 2019-20.

The four-time All-Star is the third player this summer to get a designated player "supermax" extension, joining Houston's James Harden and Stephen Curry of Golden State.

Wall has averaged 18.8 points, 10.7 assists and two steals in a seven-year NBA career spent entirely with the Wizards.

Checking out other NBA news:

— Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert is downplaying reports that All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving wants to be traded. Gilbert says he's aware of the reports and added that he recently met with Irving, although he wouldn't divulge the nature of their discussion. Gilbert pointed out that Irving is under contract for two more seasons and said he expects him to be in training camp.

— The Suns have announced the signing of big man Alan Williams to a three-year, $17 million contract. The 24-year-old Williams averaged 7.4 points on 51 percent shooting and 6.2 rebounds in 47 games last season, his second in the NBA.

— The Lakers have re-signed guard Tyler Ennis, who was acquired from the Rockets in February. Ennis appeared in 22 games for the Lakers, averaging 7.7 points and 2.4 assists.

NFL:

Browns rookie defensive end Myles Garrett has fully recovered from a foot sprain and is ready for training camp.

The No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft suffered a left lateral foot sprain during minicamp in June. Garrett was placed in a walking boot and there was some concern that he might be sidelined for an extensive period. But coach Hue Jackson said Wednesday that Garrett is "totally healthy" and will be on the field when camp opens Thursday.

Also, Jackson said Cody Kessler will begin camp as the first-team quarterback and will compete with Brock Osweiler and rookie DeShone Kizer for the starting job.

In other NFL news:

— Broncos coach Vance Joseph says he's in no hurry to select between Trevor Semian and Paxton Lynch as his starting quarterback. Joseph noted that most teams work in the backup QB with the starters during camp, but Pro Bowl receivers Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders have said they hope a decision will be made as soon as possible.

— The Vikings have signed two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Everson Griffen to a contract extension. Griffen has 48 sacks in seven seasons with the Vikings, who drafted him in the fourth round in 2010 out of USC.

— The Chargers have acquired quarterback Cardale Jones from the Bills in exchange for an undisclosed conditional draft pick. The Chargers are looking for a mobile, athletic third-string quarterback behind Philip Rivers and Kellen Clemens.

— The Rams have signed 13-year veteran quarterback Dan Orlovsky as a possible backup to Jared Goff. Orlovsky spent the past three seasons as Matthew Stafford's backup with the Lions, throwing 40 passes in two games in 2015.

— The Jets have claimed wide receiver-kick returner Lucky Whitehead, two days after the Cowboys cut him following a shoplifting charge that proved to be a case of mistaken identity. A man used Whitehead's identity to steal $40 worth of food and drink from a Virginia convenience store in June.

NHL:

The Boston Bruins have avoided salary arbitration with Ryan Spooner by working out a one-year package worth over $2.8 million.

Spooner had 11 goals and 39 points in 78 games last season before becoming a restricted free agent. He has registered 32 goals and 117 points in 214 NHL games.

MICHAEL VICK:

Public opposition is growing against the planned induction of former football star Michael Vick into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame.

The Roanoke Times reports that two online petitions at change.org had received more than 90,000 combined signatures against the September induction.

The university in Blacksburg has continued to defend its recent decision, noting that some believe Vick is the greatest athlete in school history.

The former NFL Pro Bowl quarterback served 19 months in federal prison on 2007 dogfighting convictions.
