NBA:

In the NBA, Chicago beat Charlotte 115-109, Toronto bested Dallas 100-78, Minnesota topped Washington 119-104, San Antonio defeated Atlanta 107-99, Memphis won against Milwaukee 113-93, Utah beat the Clippers 114-108, Sacramento topped Orlando 120-115, and it was Denver over the Lakers 129-101.

It couldn't last forever. The Washington Wizards were trying for a road sweep, but fell short by a game. Karl-Anthony Towns had 39 points and 13 rebounds to lead the home-standing Minnesota Timberwolves to a 119-104 win. The Wizards finished their 5-game road trip 4-1 and fell a half-game further off the pace with the Eastern Conference leaders in Cleveland. The Wizards are now two and a half games behind the Cavaliers in the race for the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. John Wall led Washington with 27 points.

NHL:

In the NHL, Tampa Bay won against the Rangers 3-2, Carolina doubled up the Islanders 8-4, and Boston topped Vancouver 6-3.

It was a banner night for the Columbus Blue Jackets of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League. With their 5-3 win at Philadelphia against the Flyers, the Blue Jackets set franchise records for wins — 44 — and points in a season, with 94. Philadelphia has lost 10 of its last 15 to hurt its fading playoff chances.

NCAA:

It’s definitely March Madness out there. A late winter storm pummeling parts of the mid-Atlantic and the Northeast is playing havoc with the traveling schedules of teams participating in the NCAA Men's and Women's basketball tournaments. Villanova, the top overall seed in the men's competition starting this week, left Philadelphia Monday afternoon on a flight to Buffalo, New York, to get ahead of the storm that's projected to last three days. On the women's side, top-seeded University of Connecticut doesn't have to play until Saturday, giving Albany, Syracuse and Iowa State more time to travel. No. 1 seed UConn will take on UAlbany on Saturday at 11 a.m. No. 8 Syracuse faces No. 9 Iowa State at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. No. 12 Quinnipiac plays No. 5 Marquette on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

UConn is the Number 1 overall seed in the women's NCAA Tournament. The Huskies' road to a fifth straight national championship will begin at home against 16th seed Albany on Saturday. A rematch from last season's title game with Syracuse looms in the second round. UConn potentially wouldn't have to leave the state of Connecticut until the Final Four in Dallas.

UConn beat Syracuse in last year's national championship game. If the schools meet again in this year's NCAA Tournament, it will be on the Huskies' home court. UConn is the top seed in the Bridgeport Regional and will host the first two rounds on campus, about 80 miles north of the regional site.

MLB:

In baseball’s spring training, the Mets won against Miami 6-4 and Toronto edged Boston 4-3.

Outfielder Brandon Nimmo is returning to the New York Mets' spring training camp after pulling his right hamstring while playing for Italy in the World Baseball Classic. Nimmo walked in the first inning Sunday at Guadalajara, Mexico, took a called third strike in the third, then left the game after consecutive triples by Puerto Rico in the fifth.

Take a bow, Tim Tebow. The former NFL quarterback singled Monday in an exhibition game against Miami Marlins, his first hit with the New York Mets since trying is luck with professional baseball. Tebow was hitless in his first eight at-bats in spring training before his opposite-field single on a 2-2 pitch leading off the bottom of the fifth inning. He was then erased on a double-play grounder.

The Buffalo Bills began restocking their defensive line depth by agreeing to sign Ryan Davis. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 260 pounds, Davis has primarily played as a backup defensive end over five NFL seasons. He was an undrafted free agent out of Bethune-Cookman and played his first four NFL seasons with Jacksonville before spending last year in Dallas.

In Tokyo, Didi Gregorius drove in five runs to lead the Netherlands over Israel 12-2 and hand the tournament debutants their first loss of the World Baseball Classic. Gregorius doubled in a run in the third when the Netherlands scored four to take a 6-0 lead. The designated hitter then hit a three-run homer in the fourth to make it 10-0.

— Miguel Cabrera hit a solo homer and Rougned Odor had a long RBI single during a three-run ninth inning and Venezuela rallied to beat Italy 4-3 to qualify for the second round of the World Baseball Classic. Mexico was eliminated by virtue of a tie-breaker, runs allowed per inning played.

NFL:

The Patriots have made a move to fill some losses on defense this offseason with the signing of free agent lineman Lawrence Guy. New England announced Guy's signing yesterday, the latest addition in what's already been a busy free agent period for the Super Bowl champions. Guy is a six-year NFL veteran, with stops in Green Bay, Indianapolis, San Diego and most recently Baltimore.

The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to terms on a two-year contract with quarterback Nick Foles. The 28-year-old Foles returns to the team that drafted him and where he had his most success. He went to the Pro Bowl after having one of the best statistical seasons in NFL history in 2013. Foles will be Carson Wentz's backup. Chase Daniel is expected to be traded or released.

A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that free agent guard John Jerry has agreed to return to the New York Giants. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the three-year deal has not been signed. The person said yesterday that the deal is worth $10 million, with a little over $4 million guaranteed.

In other NFL news:

— DeMarcus Ware won't be returning to either the Dallas Cowboys or the Denver Broncos as expected. The 12-year NFL veteran is instead retiring from the NFL. Ware announced his decision Monday on Twitter. Next to a split image of the Cowboys and Broncos, Ware wrote, "After a lot of thought and prayer, I've decided to accept the unknown and retire from my NFL career."

—Terrelle Pryor doesn't know if Kirk Cousins will be the Washington Redskins' starting quarterback, but he hopes so. Pryor signed a one-year deal with the Redskins last week hours after Cousins signed his franchise tender, and the day after the team fired general manager Scot McCloughan. Pryor wants Cousins to be the one throwing him the ball, but he doesn't need that after what the versatile receiver went through with the Browns. "I played with six quarterbacks last year," he said.

—The Indianapolis Colts have signed two more free agents — defensive end Margus Hunt and offensive lineman Brian Schwenke. Terms of the deals were not immediately available. Hunt was Cincinnati's second-round pick in 2013 and played in 44 games, with 26 tackles, 1½ sacks and three passes defensed. Earlier, Indianapolis formally signed linebacker Barkevious Mingo. He agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.5 million. Cleveland drafted the 6-foot-2, 240-pound LSU product with the No. 6 overall pick in 2013, but he hasn't lived up to the hype.

— The Carolina Panthers have re-signed offensive lineman Chris Scott to a one-year contract. The 6-foot-4, 345-pound Scott played in 12 games in 2016 with four starts, including three at right guard. The 29-year-old Scott has mostly served as a backup during his four seasons in Carolina.

Times Union Center:

After the Albany Devil's exit for Binghamton, the Capital Region was left without an AHL franchise team for the first time in decades. But the Times Union Center is currently in talks to bring an arena football franchise to the region alongside a professional lacrosse team. The Times Union reports that the leagues in the talks had previously stocked teams in the arena.
