NBA:
Of the Knicks' many agonizing losses this season, Sunday's may have been the most torturous. The Knicks were losers in their first quadruple-overtime game in 66 years, falling 142-139 to the Hawks in Atlanta.
Meanwhile Golden State defeated Portland 113-111, Dallas bested San Antonio 105-101, Chicago won against Philadelphia 121-108, Indiana beat Houston 120-101, Washington defeated New Orleans 107-94, Orlando squeaked by Toronto 114-113, and it was Cleveland over Oklahoma City 107-91.
NHL:
Blue Jackets forward Cam Atkinson and Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds scored five seconds apart as the Metropolitan Division beat the Pacific Division 4-3 in the final of the NHL All-Star game at Los Angeles. The Metropolitans trailed 3-2 until Atkinson and Simmonds tallied to put them ahead with 5:03 remaining. They each scored twice for their division, which knocked off the Atlantic Division 10-6 before rallying against the Pacific.
Longtime Los Angeles Kings play-by-play voice Bob Miller remains hospitalized after suffering a stroke during the NHL's All-Star weekend festivities on Saturday. The team said in a statement that the Hall of Fame broadcaster is doing well and in good spirits, but provided no further details on the 78-year-old Miller. Miller in his 44th season with the Kings and has planned to work a reduced schedule this year following quadruple bypass surgery.
The Chicago Blackhawks have placed defenseman Michal Rozsival on injured reserve with an unspecified injury suffered during practice on Wednesday. The 38-year-old Rozsival has played just 14 games this season, recording one assist and a -2.
NFL:
The AFC came out on top in the Pro Bowl at Orlando. The junior conference took a 20-7 lead before a late interception secured a 20-13 win over the NFC. Alex Smith threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Doug Baldwin, and Andy Dalton found Travis Kelce for a 23-yard score to put the AFC in control. The outcome hung on the balance until Lorenzo Alexander picked off Kirk Cousins deep in AFC territory with just over a minute to play.
New England Patriots fans will have one more chance to see the team and wish the players luck before they leave to play in the Super Bowl in Houston. The team is inviting fans to a special Super Bowl send-off rally this morning on NRG Plaza outside The Hall at Patriot Place. Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft, head coach Bill Belichick and team captains Tom Brady, Devin McCourty, Dont'a Hightower and Matthew Slater will all be there.
The Indianapolis Colts have found a new general manager. Owner Jim Irsay has hired former Kansas City executive Chris Ballard, who has never served as a GM. He was hired by the Chiefs in 2013 as the director of player personnel and was promoted to director of football operations under current Kansas City GM John Dorsey. The hiring comes eight days after Ryan Grigson was dismissed. Grigson also was a first-time GM when he took over the Colts' front office in 2012.
The San Francisco 49ers' new general manager is former NFL safety and Fox Sports football analyst John Lynch. The three-time All Pro selection replaces Trent Baalke and inherits a franchise that was 2-14 this season, matching the worst in team history. Lynch comes into the job with no front-office experience, having gone straight from the playing field to the broadcast booth in 2008.
Tennis:
Roger Federer has won his fifth Australian Open title with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 triumph over Rafael Nadal. Federer followed Serena Williams' victory in the women's final by outlasting longtime nemesis Rafael Nadal for the men's championship. Federer was just 2-6 all-time against Nadal in Grand Slam finals. The 35-year-old Federer is the oldest man since Ken Rosewall in 1972 to win a slam. It's his 18th career major title and his first since 2012 Wimbledon.
Serena Williams claimed her record seventh Australian Open women's title on Saturday with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over her sister, Venus. It was Williams' 23rd Grand Slam championship, an Open era record and one off the all-time mark held by Margaret Court.
NCAA:
Top-ranked Villanova trailed by as many as 10 in the second half on Sunday before Donte DiVicenzo scored on a tip-in at the buzzer to give the Wildcats a 61-59 win over 12th-ranked Virginia. Jalen Brunson and Mikal Bridges each scored 15 points as the Wildcats bounced back from last week's loss to Marquette. Villanova hasn't dropped two in a row since 2013.
In other finals:
— Kadeem Allen scored 14 points and Kobi Simmons added 13 as seventh-ranked Arizona topped Washington, 77-66 to improve to 20-2. The Wildcats have won 14 straight overall and are 9-0 in the Pac 12.
— Donovan Mitchell scored Louisville's first 14 points and finished with 28 as the 13th-ranked Cardinals ripped North Carolina State, 85-60. Mitchell hit a pair of 3-pointers during a 15-0 spurt that gave Louisville a 21-9 lead.
— Cincinnati won its 12th in a row as freshman Jarron Cumberland scored 18 of his career-best 26 points in the second half of the 19th-ranked Bearcats' 94-53 throttling of South Florida. Kyle Washington contributed 11 of his 13 points while Cincinnati was forging a 49-25 halftime lead.
— Reserve Jack McVeigh matched his season high with 21 points, and reserve Jeriah Horne had 16 points as Nebraska knocked off 20th-rated Purdue, 83-80. The Cornhuskers hit four of six free throws after Michael Jacobson's putback with 42 seconds left put them ahead to stay.
— No. 24 Xavier pulled out an 82-77 win at St. John's as Trevon Blueitt contributed 21 points and 10 boards. Edmond Sumner had 17 points and seven assists for the Musketeers, who led 59-44 midway through the second half.
— Virginia Tech beat Boston College 85-79 yesterday. Seth Allen and Justin Bibbs each scored 18 points for Virginia Tech. Jordan Chatman scored a career-high 30 points for Boston College, which has lost five straight.
— Binghamton pulled away to beat Maine 65-54 yesterday. Timmy Rose had a career-best 20 points, and Willie Rodriguez made a pair of key 3-pointers for Binghamton. Wesley Myers scored 22 points to lead Maine, which has lost 12 of 13.
— UAlbany beat Harford on Saturday 74-61, Syracuse beat Florida State 82-72,
In college women's basketball, Syracuse beat Virginia Tech 82-72 and UAlbany beat Hartford on Saturday 82-71.
— Number 17 Miami recovered in the closing minutes to hand Boston College its eighth straight loss yesterday, 58-51. Laura Cornelius and Jessica Thomas scored 15 points apiece for Miami. Boston College missed its last three shots and had four turnovers after taking the lead. The Eagles had 34 of the 61 turnovers in the game.
Miami Marathon:
Former Dartmouth runner Christopher Zablocki, of Essex, Connecticut, won the damp, chilly Miami Marathon yesterday with a time of 2 hours, 18 minutes, 15 seconds. Marta Ayala, of Ethiopia, won the women's title in 2:40:51. About 23,000 runners participated in the marathon and half marathon in rain on the coldest day of the winter in Miami, with high temperatures in the 50s.
PGA:
Spaniard Jon Rahm eagled two of his final six holes to win the PGA's Farmers Insurance Open by three shots over Charles Howell III and C.T. Pan. Rahm closed with a 5-under 67 that was capped by a 60-foot eagle putt from the back fringe of the par-5 18th. The 22-year-old became the youngest tournament champion and the first player in 26 years to get his initial PGA Tour title at Torrey Pines.
LPGA:
Brittany Lincicome birdied the first playoff hole to beat fellow American Lexi Thompson in the season-opening LPGA event in the Bahamas. Lincicome fired a 5-under 68 on Sunday for a 26 under total, one off the tour record in relation to par. Americans Stacy Lewis and Gerina Piller were third and fourth respectively.
