NFL:
On Sunday, Tom Brady is now the NFL's leader in career wins by a quarterback with 201 as New England beat the Rams 26-10. For the game he threw for 269 yards and a touchdown. The Patriots, who are now 10-2, have won seven of their last eight.
Meanwhile Oakland topped Buffalo 38-24, Pittsburgh won against the Giants 24-14, Seattle blasted Carolina 40-7, Tampa Bay beat San Diego 28-21, Arizona bested Washington 31-23, Detroit beat New Orleans 28-13, Cincinnati topped Philadelphia 32-14, Chicago trumped San Francisco 26-6, Kansas City beat Atlanta 29-28, Green Bay won against Houston 21-13, Baltimore defeated Miami 38-6, and it was Denver over Jacksonville 20-10.
On Monday Night Football, Indianapolis is in the Meadowlands to face the Jets at 8:30 p.m.
NBA:
In the NBA, the Knicks topped Sacramento 106-98, Indiana won against the Clippers 111-102, Oklahoma City beat New Orleans 101-92, and it was Orlando over Detroit 98-92.
Russell Westbrook became the first player with five consecutive triple-doubles since Michael Jordan had seven straight in 1989 and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the New Orleans Pelicans 101-92.
NHL:
In the NHL, Detroit beat the Islanders in overtime 4-3, Montreal beat Los Angeles in a shootout 5-4, Carolina blanked Tampa Bay 1-0, Philadelphia doubled up Nashville 4-2, Winnipeg skated by Chicago 2-1, Calgary bested Anaheim 8-3, and it was Minnesota over Edmonton 2-1 in overtime.
MLB:
The New York Yankees have agreed to a one-year, $13 million deal with free agent outfielder Matt Holliday, according to a person familiar with the talks. Holliday is a 7-time All-Star and became a free agent when St. Louis declined his $17 million option.
Former commissioner Bud Selig and longtime general manager John Schuerholz have been elected to the baseball Hall of Fame. Schuerholz was picked by all 16 voters on a veterans committee at the winter meetings. Selig was listed 15 times in becoming the fifth of 10 commissioners to reach the Hall.
NCAA:
The four schools fighting for the national championship in college football are, as they are seeded from 1 to 4, Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Washington.
The Clemson Tigers will face Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl while the Alabama Crimson Tide goes against the Huskies of Washington in the Peach Bowl, which serve as the national semifinal games.
Left out from the semifinals are Penn State and Michigan, finishing fifth and sixth in the rankings. The results show three schools from the Big Ten among the top six. It all comes down to the national championship game Jan. 9 in Tampa. In other major bowl game matchups:
Michigan will face Florida State in the Orange Bowl, Southern Cal will go against Penn State in the Rose Bowl, Wisconsin will meet Western Michigan in the Cotton Bowl and Auburn is playing Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl.
The Big Ten's Northwestern will take on Pittsburgh in the Pinstripe Bowl December 28th at Yankee Stadium. Pitt was the only team in the country this season to beat two teams currently ranked in the top five, in Clemson and Penn State.
In women’s college basketball, Napheesa Collier led No. 2 UConn with 24 points as the Huskies beat No. 14 Texas 72-54 yesterday. Kia Nurse also scored 15 points for UConn, which ran its winning streak to 82 straight.
Brittney Sykes and Alexis Peterson scored 26 points apiece and No. 20 Syracuse defeated Central Connecticut State 95-63 on Sunday.
In men’s college basketball, Chaise Daniels scored 17 points and had four steals as Quinnipiac downed Marist 77-63. Mikey Dixon added 14 points. Marist was led by Ryan Funk with 23 points and Khallid Hart, who scored 18.
Quadir Welton scored 18 points as Saint Peter's beat Manhattan 84-70. Trevis Wyche also scored 17 points and Antwon Portley had 15 for Saint Peter's. Zavier Turner led the Jaspers with 30 points.
Justin Robinson scored 28 as Monmouth beat Canisius 94-88. Micah Seaborn also scored 25. Je'lon Hornbeak also scored 15 for Monmouth, which shot 51 percent for the game.
Artificial Turf:
The country's leading maker of artificial sports turf reportedly kept selling it even after learning of defects and knowing it might not live up to its lofty marketing claims. NJ.com reports internal emails found FieldTurf execs continued selling Duraspine turf even after finding in 2005 it was breaking apart long before it should.
Golf:
Japan's Hideki Matsuyama won the Hero World Challenge golf tournament in Nassau, Bahamas. Matsuyama, who started the final round with a seven-shot lead, never let anyone closer than six shots heading to the back nine. The final nine holes were a struggle, however as he won by two shots over Henrik Stenson. .Tiger Woods, in his first tournament in more than 15 months, shot 76 and finished 15th.
