MLB:

The Chicago Cubs are one win away from their first World Series berth in 71 years. The Cubs head back to Chicago with a three-games-to-two lead in the NL Championship Series following an 8-4 rout of the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

U.S. Coast Guard officials say they'll examine lighting on the Miami Beach jetty involved in a boat crash that killed Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez and two other men last month. Rear Admiral Paul Thomas told U.S. Senator Marco Rubio in a letter this week that the Coast Guard will perform a new analysis of the jetties at the entrance to a channel that runs past the southern end of Miami Beach. Thomas mentioned to Rubio that an analysis performed last November found that aids to navigation in the area met boaters' needs.

NFL:

On Thursday Night Football, Green Bay blasted Chicago 26-10.

On Sunday at 9:30 a.m. the Giants take on Los Angeles in London. Buffalo sees the Dolphins in Miami at 1 p.m., the Ravens join the Jets at MetLife Stadium, and New England is in Pittsburgh at 4:25 p.m. to take on the Steelers.

The NFL is re-opening its investigation of Giants placekicker Josh Brown after police released journal entries and emails in which he admitted verbally and physically abusing his ex-wife. The King County Sherriff's Office in Washington released the documents late Wednesday to SportsNet New York. The league made repeated attempts to obtain any evidence and relevant information in the May 2015 case, but was denied by the Sherriff's Office. Brown was left home while the Giants flew to London for Sunday's game against the Rams. The Giants said they want to review the new information and reach a decision on the kicker's future with the club, possibly next week.

NHL:

In the NHL, Boston topped New Jersey 2-1, Vancouver won against Buffalo 2-1, Montreal beat Arizona 5-2, Pittsburgh defeated San Jose 3-2, Anaheim edged Philadelphia 3-2, Minnesota skated past Toronto 3-2, Edmonton bested St. Louis 3-1, Carolina doubled up Calgary 4-2, Anaheim edged Philadelphia 3-2, Washington slid past Florida 4-2, Colorado blanked Tampa Bay 4-0, and it was Los Angeles over Dallas 4-3.

Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Matt Murray has a new contract with the Stanley Cup champs, accepting a three-year extension that will run through the 2019-2020 season. The 22-year-old helped the Penguins to the franchise's fourth championship last spring after taking over for the injured Marc-Andre Fleury. Murray has yet to play this season while recovering from a broken hand suffered while competing for Team North America in the World Cup of Hockey.

NBA:

In NBA preseason play, the Knicks beat Brooklyn 116-111, Atlanta defeated Chicago 97-81, Orlando topped New Orleans 114-111, and it was Charlotte over Miami 96-88.

UP NEXT: New York (4-2) visits Cleveland on Tuesday in its regular-season opener. Brooklyn (1-5) is at Boston to open the season on Wednesday.

Philadelphia 76ers forward Elton Brand has announced his retirement after 17 NBA seasons. He was the Bulls' first overall pick in the 1999 draft and went on to win rookie of the year honors. Brand ends his career averaging 15.9 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in a career spent with the Bulls, Mavericks, Hawks and Sixers.

NCAA:

In men’s college basketball in the America East, Vermont scored 62pts in the preseason coaches’ poll to take the number one spot as favorite. New Hampshire came in second and Albany came in third.

Washington State football coach Mike Leach has been fined $10,000 and reprimanded by the Pac-12 Conference for comments about the Arizona State program. Leach warned during his Monday news conference that he thought the Sun Devils and coach Todd Graham would steal signs, calling it "a very unsavory practice." Leach also mentioned that he heard rumors about Arizona State using microphones and cameras to get signs from the other sideline. Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott issued a statement saying it was against conference rules for member schools from disparaging and discrediting other institutions.

The NCAA is accusing Louisville of four violations stemming from its investigation of allegations that a former men's basketball staffer hired escorts and strippers for sex parties with Cardinals recruits and players. The report does not mention a lack of institutional control, considered the most serious violation, but says coach Rick Pitino failed to monitor staffer Andre McGee. Louisville has 90 days to respond.

WNBA:

In the WNBA, Los Angeles beat Minnesota 77-76.

PGA:

Derek Fathauer, Keegan Bradley and Justin Thomas are tied for the lead after the opening round of the PGA Tour's CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. All opened with an 8-under-64. Paul Casey trails by a shot in a field that includes the top 60 players available from last season's FedEx Cup standings and 10 leading players from the Asian Tour money list.

LPGA:

Australian Minjee Lee has a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Blue Bay LPGA event in China. She birdied the final three holes for a 7-under 65. American Jessica Korda and Germany's Sandra Gal shot 67 to tie for second.
