#SportsReport: Toronto Holds Off Cleveland

MLB:

In baseball, Toronto held off Cleveland 5-1, the Indians lead the series three-games-to-one. The Dodgers topped the Cubs 6-0 to take a 2-1 series lead.

Former Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale is returning to the Oakland Athletics as third base coach. Hale was fired by Arizona Oct. 3 after two seasons and a 148-176 record. He previously was the Athletics bench coach before taking the Arizona job.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have taken control of the National League Championship Series by blanking the Chicago Cubs for the second straight game.

Rich Hill combined with three relievers on a four-hitter as the Dodgers beat the Cubs, 6-0, to take a two-games-to-one lead. Hill struck out six and held Chicago to two hits and two walks over six innings. The left-hander was sharp after surrendering five runs over seven innings during his two starts in the division series.

Yasmani Grandal, Corey Seager, and Justin Turner highlighted the Dodgers' 10-hit attack. Grandal crushed a two-run homer in the fourth off losing pitcher Jake Arrieta and capped the scoring with an RBI grounder in the eighth. Seager opened the scoring with one of his three hits, an RBI single in the third. Turner launched a solo blast in the sixth to end Arrieta's night.

Arrieta was reached for four runs and six hits over five-plus innings.

The Cubs haven't scored since they put together a five-run eighth in the series opener. Dodgers starters have limited Chicago to three runs and eight hits over 17 innings.

Game 4 is Wednesday in Los Angeles. John Lackey will try to help the Cubs even the series. The Dodgers will go with Julio Urias.

The Toronto Blue Jays have extended the American League Championship Series to a fifth game.

Aaron Sanchez worked six strong innings and the Blue Jays avoided a four-game sweep by downing the Cleveland Indians, 5-1. Sanchez limited the Indians to a run and two hits with five strikeouts to help Toronto force a Game 5.

The Blue Jays awoke from their offensive slumber after managing just three runs and 17 hits over the first three games of the series. Third baseman Josh Donaldson opened the scoring with a solo homer in the bottom of the third, two innings before his diving stop likely prevented a game-tying run. Donaldson's blast gave the Jays their first lead of the series.

Edwin Encarnacion added a two-run single in the seventh to give Toronto breathing room.

The Blue Jays' bullpen came through with three perfect innings to cap the combined two-hitter. Cleveland couldn't put a runner on base following an RBI double by Roberto Perez in the fifth.

Losing pitcher Corey Kluber lasted just five innings while pitching on short rest for the first time in his career, charged with two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts. Kluber tossed shutout ball in his two previous postseason starts.

Game 5 is Wednesday, when the Blue Jays will send Marco Estrada to the mound against rookie Ryan Merritt.

NHL:

In the NHL, San Jose beat the Islanders 3-2, New Jersey won against Anaheim 2-1, Calgary topped Buffalo 4-3, Washington blanked Colorado 3-0, Tampa Bay edged Florida in a shootout 4-3, Minnesota doubled up Los Angeles 6-3, Chicago beat Philadelphia 7-4, Edmonton skated past Carolina 3-2, Vancouver beat St. Louis 2-1, Ottawa beat Arizona 7-4, and Montreal blanked Pittsburgh 4-0.

NBA:

In NBA preseason play, Washington won against Cleveland 96-91, Miami bested Orlando 107-77, Atlanta topped New Orleans 96-89, Oklahoma City defeated Denver 97-87, and it was the Clippers over Sacramento 92-89.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver says returning the All-Star Game to Charlotte in 2019 is "a high priority," provided there's a resolution to a North Carolina law that restricts the rights of LGBT people. The NBA recently decided to move the 2017 All-Star Game to New Orleans because of the climate created by the law. Los Angeles hosts the game in 2018.

NASCAR:

The stock car circuit is resurrecting its series in the country behind a new title sponsor. The rebranded NASCAR PEAK Mexico Series will mark its return with an exhibition race in Mexico City in December. The series plans to run a full championship schedule next year. NASCAR Mexico did not run this year as NASCAR reassessed the program after nine seasons.

Golf:

The World Golf Hall of Fame will add five new members next year. The class of 2017 includes golfers Ian Woosnam, Davis Love III, Meg Mallon and Lorena Ochoa, along with longtime British reporter Henry Longhurst. The five inductees were chosen by a 16-member "selection commission" led by Jack Nicklaus, Nancy Lopez, Gary Player and Annika Sorenstam, along with nine golf administrators and three journalists. The induction will be Sept. 26 in New York.

NFL:

Running back Knile Davis practiced with the Green Bay Packers Tuesday after being acquired from Kansas City for a conditional draft pick. The Packers were in desperate need of a running back with James Starks undergoing knee surgery and Eddie Lacy nursing an ankle injury. Davis should be fresh after carrying just 29 times for 70 yards and a touchdown the past two seasons combined.

Jets receiver Eric Decker has had hip surgery while on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. The Jets announced on their website that the hip surgery was deemed necessary after Decker had an evaluation when he was placed on IR last week with a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder. The team said the anticipated recovery time for Decker's hip surgery is six months.

In other injury news:

— Tampa Bay receiver Vincent Jackson has been placed on injured reserve with a torn left ACL. The three-time Pro Bowl selection had 15 receptions for 173 yards in five games this season.

— Browns safety Jordan Poyer has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a lacerated kidney in Sunday's loss at Tennessee. He was discharged from the hospital two days after the injury and will return to Cleveland.

— The Falcons have placed defensive end Derrick Shelby on injured reserve with a torn Achilles tendon, ending his season. He left Sunday's loss at Seattle with what was initially announced as a calf injury. Shelby left the Dolphins to sign a four-year, $18 million deal with Atlanta in March.
