#SportsReport: Giants And Pats Take First Wins Of Regular Season

NFL football

NFL:

In the NFL, the Giants beat Dallas 20-19, New England won against Arizona 23-21, Cincinnati topped the Jets 23-22, and it was Baltimore over Buffalo 13-7. Meanwhile Green Bay won against Jacksonville 27-23, Houston topped Chicago 23-14, Minnesota beat Tennessee 25-16, Tampa Bay topped Atlanta 31-24, Oakland slid past New Orleans 35-34, Kansas City beat San Diego in overtime 33-27, Seattle won against Miami 12-10, and Detroit beat Indianapolis 39-35.

The national debate sparked by NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick's protests during performances of "The Star Spangled Banner" has permeated down to high school sports programs in Maine. A South Portland high school athletic director tweeted about the proper way to show respect during the anthem, but later agreed such displays of respect are voluntary. Athletic Administrator Todd Livingston tells the Portland Press Herald he wanted teams to look good and behave appropriately when addressing the flag.

The NFL is reviewing how the Panthers medical team handled a hit to Cam Newton's head during Carolina's season-opening loss to Denver. The league says it wants to ensure the concussion protocol is being "uniformly applied across all 32 teams." Newton took several hard hits in Thursday night's game, including one after which he appeared woozy. The union has questioned why Newton didn't undergo a cognitive exam on the sideline during the game.

MLB:

In baseball, the Boston Red Sox have managed to widen their lead in the AL East by two games over Toronto and Baltimore, and with the Yankees four games back, Boston topped Toronto 11-8. Meanwhile Tampa Bay doubled up the Yankees 4-2, the Mets bested Atlanta 10-3, Baltimore won against Detroit 3-1, Kansas City blanked the White Sox 2-0, Cleveland edged Texas 3-2, Seattle slid past Oakland 3-2, Milwaukee beat St. Louis 2-1, Colorado bested San Diego 3-2 in 10 innings, San Francisco beat Arizona 5-3, Washington defeated Philadelphia 3-2, Cincinnati shut out Pittsburgh 8-0, and it was Miami over the Dodgers 3-0.

Tennis:

Third seed Stan Wawrinka (vah-VRIHN'-kuh) wore down Novak Djokovic (JOH'-koh-vihch) and knocked off the defending champion 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3. Wawrinka had dropped 19 of his previous 23 meetings with Djokovic before capturing his first U.S. Open crown and third Grand Slam title. The 31-year-old Wawrinka is the oldest U.S. Open men's champion since Ken Rosewall was 35 in 1970.

WNBA:

In the WNBA, Dallas beat New York 84-81, Chicago beat Connecticut 96-86, Seattle beat Los Angeles 78-60, Phoenix beat Atlanta 86-75, Minnesota beat San Antonio 81-76, and Indiana won against Washington 80-73.

NCAA:

Alabama remains the No. 1 team in The Associated Press football poll after claiming 56 of 61 first-place votes. Florida State received four first-place votes to move up a notch to second, followed by Ohio State, Michigan and Clemson. Houston, Stanford, Washington, Wisconsin and Louisville round out the top 10.

The Mid-American Conference says the eight-man officiating crew that worked Saturday's Oklahoma State-Central Michigan has been suspended for two games. Officials mistakenly gave Central Michigan an untimed final play from midfield after Oklahoma State was penalized for intentional grounding while trying to run off the last four seconds of the fourth quarter with a three-point lead. The Big 12 has announced that the two-person video replay crew that worked the same game has also has been suspended for two games.

PGA:

Reigning U.S. champion Dustin Johnson won the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick to take over the lead in the FedEx Cup standings. Johnson closed with a 5-under 67 for a 23-under total in his third victory in his last eight tournaments. Paul Casey finished three shots back and three ahead of Roberto Castro.
