MLB:
In baseball, in the American League, the Yankees beat Baltimore 5-3, Oakland blanked Boston 1-0, the Angels doubled up Seattle 4-2, Detroit edged Kansas City 6-5, the White Sox won against Minnesota 13-11 in 12 innings, and it was Toronto over Tampa Bay 5-3. Toronto remains atop the AL East, one game ahead of Boston.
In the National League, the Mets bested Washington 5-1, Arizona won against Colorado 8-5, the Dodgers topped San Diego 7-4, the Cubs edged San Francisco 3-2 in 13 innings, Milwaukee blanked Pittsburgh 10-0, Atlanta shut out Philadelphia 2-0, and it was St. Louis over Cincinnati 5-2.
In interleague play, Cleveland beat Miami 6-5.
The San Diego Padres have released former All-Star shortstop Alexei Ramirez, who was hitting .240 with five homers and 41 RBIs in 128 games. The last-place Padres signed Ramirez as a free agent this past offseason. He played his first eight years with the White Sox, batting .273 with 109 homers.
Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw is set to make his return to the rotation Friday at Miami after spending more than two months on the disabled list with a herniated disk. Manager Dave Roberts says Kershaw won't have a specific pitch count, but the team will be looking at the big picture with the playoffs coming up next month. Kershaw was 11-2 with a 1.79 ERA before getting injured in late June.
WNBA:
In the WNBA, Washington beat Dallas 88-83, Chicago bested San Antonio 97-73, Seattle topped Atlanta 91-82, the Sparks beat Indiana 88-81, and it was Minnesota over Connecticut 93-79.
NCAA:
The Associated Press top-25 football poll will look quite a bit different when it is released Tuesday. Notre Dame became the third top-10 team to fall this weekend, joining third-ranked Oklahoma and No. 5 LSU.
Tyrone Swoopes scored on a lunging 6-yard touchdown run in the second overtime to give Texas a 50-47 victory over the 10th-ranked Irish. Freshman Shane Buechele (boo-SHEHL') got the start at quarterback, but Swoopes played a huge role in Texas' running game with two scores and big runs that punished Notre Dame defenders in OT. Buechele threw for 280 yards and a pair of long touchdowns as the first freshman quarterback to start a Longhorns season opener since Bobby Layne in 1944.
Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer rallied the Irish from a 31-17 deficit in the third quarter and finished with 215 yards passing and five touchdowns.
NFL:
The Cowboys have signed Mark Sanchez to back up rookie starting quarterback Dak Prescott. Sanchez accepted a one-year pact a day after he was released by Denver. Tony Romo remains on the active roster amid uncertainly on how long he will be out with a broken bone in his back sustained in a preseason game.
The Buffalo Bills claimed fullback Dan Vitale off waivers on Sunday. Vitale was waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday. He entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick this spring. Vitale can line up as both a tight end and a fullback. As a senior, he led Northwestern in receiving with 33 catches for 355 yards and had four touchdowns. To make room for Vitale, the Bills released reserve linebacker Jamari Lattimore. The Bills also announced that wide receiver Dez Lewis and kicker Jordan Gay have been signed to the practice squad. Lewis made a push in the spring up the depth chart but struggled in the preseason. Gay was the team's kickoff specialist in 2014 and 2015.
The New York Jets have claimed four players off waivers, including tight ends Braedon Bowman from Jacksonville and Brian Parker from Kansas City. A day after setting its initial 53-man roster, New York also was awarded running back Troymaine Pope from Seattle and cornerback Darryl Roberts from New England on Sunday. To make room, the Jets waived/injured running back Khiry Robinson, who was hurt in the preseason finale last Thursday at Philadelphia. They also waived cornerback Dexter McDougle, a third-round draft pick in 2014; safety Ronald Martin; and running back Dominique Williams. New York also filled seven of its 10 practice squad spots, signing linebackers Freddie Bishop and Victor Ochi; cornerback Bryson Keeton; safety Doug Middleton; defensive lineman Claude Pelon; guard Craig Watts; and wide receiver Myles White.
NASCAR:
Martin Truex Jr. has won the Southern 500 at Darlington, taking the lead with 28 laps to go and holding off Kevin Harvick on the final restart. Harvick led 214 of 367 laps but was hampered by slow pit stops. Kyle Larson was third, followed by Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano.
Tennis:
Americans Jack Sock and Madison Keys were knocked out in the fourth round of the U.S. Open. Sock was beaten by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who is joined in the quarterfinals by top seed Novak Djokovic, Lucas Pouille, Gael Monfils. The women's quarters include Angelique Kerber, Roberta Vinci, Anastasija Sevastova and Caroline Wozniacki, who eliminated Keys.
PGA:
Paul Casey carded a birdie and an eagle over the last three holes for a 5-under 66 and a three-shot lead going into the Labor Day finish at the PGA's Deutsche Bank Championship. His approach on the par-5, 18th rolled to within 30 inches to set up an eagle that put Casey at 15-under. Brian Harman had a 68 to land in second place, one shot ahead of PGA champion Jimmy Walker, Kevin Chappell and Smylie Kaufman.
LPGA:
Germany's Caroline Masson had nine birdies on the way to a 5-under 67 that gave her a one-shot win at the Manulife LPGA Classic. It is the first tour win for the 27-year old. Tied for second were France's Karine Icher, Minjee Lee of Australia and South Korea's Mi Hyang Lee.
Saratoga:
Trainer Chad Brown has clinched enough wins at Saratoga Race Course to break a record held by Todd Pletcher. Brown secures the record with 39 wins. He registered 1,000 wins across his career on August 24th.
IndyCar:
Scott Dixon won the IndyCar Grand Prix at the Glen on Sunday at Watkins Glen International. It's his 40th victory overall, moving the New Zealander him fourth place on the career list. He also won for the second of the season, and fourth at The Glen.
Dixon won the pole Saturday with a speed of over 147 mph and a record-shattering time that eclipsed the previous record by nearly six seconds on the new pavement at the 11-turn, 3.37-mile natural terrain layout. And he dominated the race, leading 50 of the 60 laps.
Josef Newgarden was second, followed by Helio Castroneves, Conor Daly, and Sebastien Bourdais fifth. Simon Pagenaud finished seventh and increased his lead over Will Power to 43 points standings with one race remaining in the season. Power crashed just past the midpoint of the race and finished 20th. He was not permitted to return to the race because of concussion symptoms. The two Penske drivers are the only ones still in contention for the title.
F1:
Nico Rosberg won the Italian Grand Prix after Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton wasted pole position with a poor start. Hamilton got off the line at the same time as the other cars but immediately fell behind, dropping to sixth before the first corner. He climbed his way back to finish second. Rosberg's second straight victory and seventh of the season cut Hamilton's championship lead to two points with seven races remaining.
