Oscar Pistorius

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, the Yankees blanked the White Sox 9-0, Texas bested Boston 7-2, Toronto won against Kansas City 8-3, Cleveland crushed Detroit 12-1, the Angels beat Tampa Bay 13-5, Houston defeated Seattle 5-2, and it was Minnesota over Oakland 11-4.

In the National League, Miami beat the Mets 5-2, Pittsburgh defeated St. Louis 5-2, Arizona topped San Diego 7-5, Colorado bested San Francisco 7-3, Cincinnati won against the Cubs 9-5, Philadelphia beat Atlanta 5-1, and it was Milwaukee over Washington 5-2.

In interleague play, Baltimore beat the Dodgers 4-1.

Chicago police say they are investigating an allegation of sexual assault against Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang. A police spokesman said the Chicago woman met Kang through a dating app and was invited to his hotel room on June 17. The woman said she blacked out, then drifted in and out of consciousness as he sexually assaulted her.

All-Star Lineup:

In the American League, Boston has three first-time starters and four overall on the American League starting squad: designated hitter David Ortiz, shortstop Xander Bogaerts and outfielders Jackie Bradley Jr. and Mookie Betts. The Yankees had Carlos Beltran make the AL Reserve list as well as pitchers Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller with Red Sox’ Steven Wright and Craig Kimbrel.

In the National League, Yoenis Cespedes will start in the outfield for the Mets.

The Cubs have become the first team since the 1976 Reds to have five players voted as All-Star Game starters.

The Cubs' entire infield of first baseman Anthony Rizzo, second baseman Ben Zobrist, shortstop Addison Russell and third baseman Kris Bryant were elected along with Chicago outfielder Dexter Fowler. Joining the Cubs quintet are Giants catcher Buster Posey, Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper.

Royals catcher Salvador Perez and Kansas City first baseman Eric Hosmer are also part of the AL starting lineup, as are Orioles third baseman Manny Machado and Angels outfielder Mike Trout.

Legal:

Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to six years in prison for the murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Pistorius stood and faced Judge Thokozile Masipa as she announced the sentence in a South African courtroom on Wednesday. Pistorius was facing a possible 15-year jail term for shooting Steenkamp through a toilet cubicle door at his home in 2013, but Masipa said substantial and compelling circumstances existed in the double-amputee Olympic runner's case to give him a lesser sentence.

Steenkamp's parents, Barry and June, were present in the courtroom, which was packed with relatives of both Pistorius and Steenkamp and other observers. In reading out the sentence, Judge Masipa said Pistorius was a "fallen hero." The judge ordered a recess to give prosecutors and Pistorius' defense lawyers time to decide if either wanted to appeal the sentence.

Tennis:

Tenth seed Tomas Berdych won his fourth-round match at Wimbledon yesterday by outlasting fellow Czech Jiri Vesely 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3. Berdych faces Lucas Pouille in today's quarterfinals. The other quarterfinal matches have Roger Federer battling Marin Cilic, second seed Andy Murray against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and American Sam Querrey against sixth seed Milos Raonic.

The Williams sisters have stayed on track to meet in the Wimbledon final. Top seed Serena has moved into the semifinals for the 10th time with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Six-time champ Serena will next meet Elena Vesnina who beat Dominika Cibulkova 6-2, 6-2. Earlier, Venus Williams beat Yaroslava Shvedova 7-6, 6-2. The five-time champion and eighth seed last played this deep into the second week in 2009. Venus Williams will next face Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber, who beat Simona Halep 7-5, 7-6.

NHL:

The New York Rangers have agreed to terms with restricted free agents Nicklas Jensen and Mat Bodie. Jensen was acquired by the Rangers from Vancouver along with a sixth-round pick in the 2017 draft for Emerson Etem last season. He was a first-round pick by the Canucks, No. 29 overall, in the 2011 draft.

The 23-year-old Jensen skated in 68 games in the American Hockey League with the Utica Comets and Hartford Wolf Pack this past season, getting 19 goals and 18 assists. He has skated in 24 NHL games over parts of three seasons, all with Vancouver, getting three goals and three assists.

The 26-year-old Bodie skated in 76 games with the Wolf Pack this past season, getting seven goals and 29 assists. Bodie was one of two players — and the only defenseman — who skated in every game with the Wolf Pack in 2015-16. He was signed by the Rangers as an undrafted free agent on April 15, 2014.

Also in the NHL:

— The Minnesota Wild and New York Islanders have re-signed a backup goaltender. The Wild gave a one-year pact with Darcy Kuemper, who went 6-7-5 with a .915 save percentage and a 2.43 goals-against average for the team last season. J.F. Berube also took a one-year deal with the Isles after posting a 3-2-1 record with a 2.71 goals-against average and .914 save percentage in seven games for New York.

— The New Jersey Devils have signed free agent left wing Luke Gazdic and re-signed restricted free agent center Jacob Josefson.

NBA:

The Mavericks and Dirk Nowitzki have reached agreement on a two-year contract that could get the star forward to 20 seasons in Dallas. The agreement would be worth roughly $20 million per season with a player option in the second year. The 38-year-old Nowitzki has averaged 22 points and 7.9 rebounds during his NBA career since being taken ninth overall in the 1998 draft.

The Associated Press has learned from a person with knowledge of the negotiations that David West is headed to the Warriors on a one-year deal. West opted out of his contract with the Pacers last summer to try to get a title with the Spurs, but he averaged a career-low 7.1 points before the Spurs were knocked out in the Western Conference semifinals in May. The agreement was reached a day after Kevin Durant announced he was leaving the Thunder for a two-year contract with Golden State.

The Charlotte Hornets are adding center Roy Hibbert and point guard Ramon Sessions to their roster. A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Hibbert will receive a one-year deal worth $5 million and Sessions will get a two-year deal worth $12.3 million with a team option for the second season. Hibbert is expected to back up Cody Zeller, while Sessions fills in for Kemba Walker.

WNBA:

In the WNBA, Atlanta beat Seattle 77-64, Minnesota won against Chicago 87-82, and it was Dallas over Phoenix 77-74.

Soccer:

Lionel Messi and his father have been sentenced to 21 months for tax fraud but will not have to go to prison.

The first American man to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal in five years will not be part of the U.S. team that will face Croatia in the Davis Cup quarterfinals this month. Instead of Sam Querrey, who upset No. 1 Novak Djokovic en route to making the final eight at Wimbledon, the U.S. roster includes John Isner and Jack Sock in singles, and twins Bob and Mike Bryan in doubles.

The U.S. Tennis Association announced the team Tuesday. The Croatian squad includes Marin Cilic — who like Querrey will participate in the Wimbledon quarterfinals on Wednesday — along with Borna Coric, Ivan Dodig and Marin Draganja. The best-of-five series will be played in Portland, Oregon, from July 15-17.

Tour de France:

German rider Marcel Kittel has claimed the fourth stage of the Tour de France. It was Kittel's ninth stage win at the Tour. World champion Peter Sagan kept the yellow jersey as the overall leader.
