Sports Report: Sharks Swim To First Stanley Cup Appearance

San Jose Sharks

NBA:

In the NBA playoffs, Cleveland topped Toronto 116-78 to lead the Eastern Conference Finals 3-2.

The Memphis Grizzlies reportedly have offered their head coaching position to Miami Heat assistant David Fizdale. This would be the first head coaching job for Fizdale, who has been with the Heat since 2008 and has been assistant head coach the past two seasons. Fizdale would replace Dave Joerger, who was fired May 7 after guiding the team to the playoffs in each of his first three seasons.

NHL:

In the NHL playoffs, the San Jose Sharks are in the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in team history following a 5-2 win over the St. Louis Blues in Game 7. They will play tonight’s Eastern Conference finals winner, Pittsburgh or Tampa Bay.

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, Toronto doubled up the Yankees 8-4, Houston edged Baltimore 4-3, Seattle won against Oakland 13-3, Cleveland beat the White Sox 4-3, Texas bested the Angels 15-9, and it was Minnesota over Kansas City 7-5.

In the National League, the Mets blanked Washington 2-0, the Cubs edged St. Louis 9-8, San Francisco won against San Diego 4-3 in 10 innings, Pittsburgh slid past Arizona 5-4, Milwaukee beat Atlanta 3-2 in 13 innings, and it was the Dodgers over Cincinnati 3-1.

In interleague play, Boston bested Colorado 10-3, Philadelphia won against Detroit 8-5, and it was Miami over Tampa Bay 4-3.

NFL:

New York Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson says he's trying to maintain "positive vibes" about a possible suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. Richardson pleaded guilty in January to resisting arrest after police clocked him driving at speeds as high as 143 miles per hour in Missouri last July. The NFL is reviewing the case and Richardson acknowledged Wednesday that he has spoken to the league about the incident.

The New England Patriots have asked a federal appeals court in New York City to rehear the "Deflategate" case. The team said in court papers filed Wednesday in Manhattan that it has a "strong interest" in sparing quarterback Tom Brady from starting the season with a four-game suspension. A three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals voted 2-to-1 last month to reinstate Brady's four-game suspension.

DeSean Jackson isn't taking part in voluntary team workouts, and the Washington Redskins don't seem to care. Jackson was the only healthy player not at Redskins Park this week for the first organized team activities of the offseason. But teammates and coach Jay Gruden brushed off Jackson's notable absence, saying the veteran wide receiver knows how to get prepared. Says Gruden: "The last time I looked up the word 'voluntary,' it is his choice."

NCAA:

Vermont women's lacrosse coach Jen Johnson will not return to coach the team next season. In a statement, athletic director Jeff Schulman says Johnson worked hard to develop the Catamount program. Over her 12 years, Johnson's teams went 89-112. This season, UVM played to a 6-10 record.

Tennis:

Day 4 of the French Open was top-heavy with men's action.

Defending champion and third seed Stan Wawrinka advanced to the third round with a straight-sets victory, but No. 2 Andy Murray needed five sets to knock off a wild-card entry in the second round. Also advancing for the men was fifth seed Kei Nishikori, who was a U.S. Open finalist in 2014.

Among those advancing on the women's side include second seed Agnieszka Radwanska and fourth-seeded Garbine Muguruza. Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, one-time French Open champ Svetlana Kuznetsova and 2014 finalist Simona Halep also advanced to Round 3.

Thursday's schedule includes the No. 1 singles players as Novak Djokovic will be followed by Serena Williams on Court Lenglen. Men's fourth seed Rafael Nadal and No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are also slated to play second-round matches during Day 5.

Parsons was the 1973 series champion who finished among the top 10 in more than half of his 238 starts. Martin earned 40 of his 96 NASCAR victories at the Winston, Nextel or Sprint Cup level.
