Formula 1:

The Formula One season got underway in Australia in spectacular fashion with Nico (NEE'-koh) Rosberg of Mercedes beating out teammate and defending world champion Lewis Hamilton, with Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel third. The race was marred by a crash involving Fernando Alonso's car which, after colliding with the car being driven by Esteban Gutierrez, flew into the air, flipping twice. Alonso was able to walk away from the crash and thanked the advances in F1 technology.

And the race marked the debut of the new American-run Haas team. Not only did they compete, but Romain Grosjean finished in the points by ending the race in sixth place. A points finish for a new team in F1 is not a common thing.

PGA:

Jason Day survived going into a sand bunker with his second shot on the par four 18th hole to par the hole and win the Arnold Palmer Invitational by a stroke. Day won wire-to-wire and finished a shot in front of Kevin Chappell, who bogeyed the 18th. It was another great moment for Palmer, the 86-year-old tournament host who watched it unfold on the 18th green.

Woody Austin posted a one shot lead over Jim Carter to win the Champions Tour Conquistadores Classic in Tucson. Austin finished 16-under-par with a final round 65. Bernhard Langer finished third, two shots back.

Kim also matched the tournament record of 62 set Thursday by Mi Hyang Lee.

Kite-Boarding:

Competition for the world kiteboarding championship has kicked off in Egypt's Red Sea resort of el-Gouna, with 65 contestants from 26 countries shooting across the water and twirling through the air in hopes of winning 50,000 euros ($56,000) in prizes.

The Monday start of a weeklong rally is the opening round for the 2016 title in the extreme sport, with the main prize awarded for freestyle, trick-based maneuvers and another in the "big air" category for whoever can fly off the surf the highest.

Kiteboarding, also known as kitesurfing, is a fast-emerging sailing sport in which riders strap themselves to a parachute-like kite and use the wind to pull them along while standing on a board attached to their feet, with speed records of over 50 knots.
