Sports Report: Ravens Top Browns With Blocked Field Goal Return

NFL:

On Monday Night Football, Will Hill returned a blocked field goal 64 yards for a touchdown as time expired, giving the Baltimore Ravens a 33-27 win over the luckless Cleveland Browns, who lost their sixth straight game along with starting quarterback Josh McCown. The Ravens are 4-7 while the Browns slip to 2-9.

New York Jets cornerback Marcus Williams has a sprained knee ligament that could keep him out against the Giants on Sunday. Jets coach Todd Bowles says there's a chance he could play, but the team will get a better feel for Williams' status as the week progresses.

According to ESPN, an MRI showed no signs of tears in the right knee of Rob Gronkowski. He is expected to miss this week’s game and to play on a week to week basis.

The Miami Dolphins have dismissed offensive coordinator Bill Lazor. The move by interim coach Dan Campbell came a day after the Dolphins lost to the Jets 38-20. The Dolphins have scored less than 21 points in each of their past five games. Quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor has been named the team's primary playcaller.

In other NFL news:

— The NFL has moved the Dec. 13 game between New England and Houston to prime time. Switched from the Sunday night game to a day game is Seattle at Baltimore.

NBA:

In the NBA, Boston topped Miami 105-95, Detroit won against Houston 116-105, Milwaukee bested Denver 92-74, Atlanta defeated Oklahoma City 106-100, Chicago squeaked by San Antonio 92-89, Golden State edged Utah 106-103, Sacramento beat Dallas 112-98, and it was the Clippers over Portland 102-87.

NHL:

In the NHL, the Rangers beat Carolina 4-3, the Islanders won against Colorado 5-3, Toronto blanked Edmonton 3-0, and Anaheim shut out Vancouver 4-0.

New York Rangers coach Alain Vigneault says center Derek Stepan will miss four to six weeks because of broken ribs. Stepan injured his ribs during Friday's loss to Boston. He has six goals, six assists in 23 games this season.

Bad news for the Montreal Canadiens, who currently the best record in the National Hockey League. Carey Price, who won the Vezina Trophy for most outstanding goaltender and the league's most valuable player, is out an additional six weeks with a lower body injury.

MLB:

Jordan Zimmermann, a mainstay in the Washington Nationals starting rotation, is leaving the Nation's Capital for Motown. The Detroit Tigers have agreed to a $110 million, five-year contract with the hard-throwing right-hander, who won 27 games for the Nationals over the past two seasons.

In other baseball doings:

— Reliever Jim Johnson is returning to the Atlanta Braves, agreeing to a $2.5 million, one-year contract. That bolsters an Atlanta bullpen that didn't have anyone with double-figure saves last season. Johnson saved nine games for the Braves before he was dealt to the Dodgers at the trade deadline.

— Free agent catcher Brayan Pena has agreed to a $5 million, two-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he will be the backup for All-Star Yadier Molina. The 33-year-old switch-hitter receives $2.5 million in each of the next two seasons.

— A person familiar with the discussions says Barry Bonds is talking with the Miami Marlins about working for them as a hitting coach. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the discussions haven't been confirmed publicly.

NCAA:

In top 25 women’s college basketball, No. 1 UConn beat Chattanooga 79-31. Meanwhile Connecticut remains No. 1 in The Associated Press women's basketball poll. The 3-0 Huskies got all 32 first-place votes. They head into a busy three-game week in which they face third-ranked Notre Dame on Saturday. South Carolina stayed second with Baylor fourth and Maryland fifth.

In men’s college basketball, Kentucky stays at the top of this week's The Associated Press men's basketball poll. The Wildcats are off to a 7-0 start and got 59 of the first place votes. Second-ranked Maryland, which is also unbeaten after six games, received four first place nods while third-ranked Michigan State, which is 7-0, got the remaining two. Rounding out the top-five this week are Kansas and Iowa State. The second five consists of Oklahoma, Duke, Villanova, North Carolina and Virginia.

Clay Helton has been named the head football coach at Southern California after leading the Trojans to a 5-2 mark as the interim head coach Helton was the school's offensive coordinator before replacing the fired Steve Sarkisian five games into the season. A win over cross-town rival UCLA Saturday enabled the Trojans to clinch the Pac-12 South and a spot in the conference championship game. Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly denied reports that the University of Southern California met with him to discuss its coaching vacancy before the school hired Helton.

Golf:

Diana Murphy has been nominated to a one-year term as president of the U.S. Golf Association. If elected, she would be the second woman to be president of the USGA. Judy Bell was president in 1996-97. Murphy's husband, Reg Murphy, was USGA president in 1994-95.

Murphy is in her fifth year on the USGA executive committee. She is chair of the Championship and Compensation committees. She was elected treasurer in 2013 and has been a vice president the last two years.

Murphy lives in St. Simons Island, Georgia. She is managing director of Rocksolid Holdings, a private-equity firm for small business and real estate in the Southeast. The election will be Feb. 6 in San Diego at the USGA's annual meeting.

Daily Fantasy Sports:

Yahoo remains active. CBS has quietly withdrawn. And lesser known daily fantasy sports companies are scaling back. As industry leaders New York-based FanDuel and Boston-based DraftKings fight to protect their lucrative enterprises, other companies offering daily fantasy sports are taking different approaches to how they operate as their new industry faces increased scrutiny.
