Sports Report: Texans Best Jets 24-17, Buffalo In New England Tonight

NFL:

On Sunday, Houston topped the Jets 24-17, Seattle won against San Francisco 29-13, Arizona beat Cincinnati 34-31, Green Bay bested Minnesota 30-13, Kansas City defeated San Diego 33-3, Carolina beat Washington 44-16, Tampa Bay crushed Philadelphia 45-17, Baltimore edged St. Louis 16-13, Detroit trumped St. Louis 18-13, Indianapolis defeated Atlanta 24-21, Denver slid past Chicago 17-15, and it was Dallas over Miami 24-14.

On Monday Night Football, Buffalo is in New England at 8:30.

The Giants had a bye week.

NBA:

In the NBA, Brooklyn beat Boston 111-101, Toronto bested the Clippers 91-80, New Orleans topped Phoenix 122-116, Oklahoma City squeaked by Dallas 117-114, Golden State beat Denver 118-105, and it was Portland over the Lakers 107-93.

The Golden State Warriors are the third team in NBA history to open a season with 15 straight wins. They can become the first to open a season 16-0 when they host the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday.

Celtics guard Marcus Smart could miss at least a couple of weeks with a lower left leg injury. Coach Brad Stevens says Smart won't need surgery and that the injury isn't considered a long-term problem. Smart was hurt during Friday's game with Brooklyn.

NHL:

In the NHL, New Jersey edged Vancouver 3-2, Montreal doubled up the Islanders 4-2, San Jose beat Columbus 5-3, and it was Carolina over Los Angeles 4-3.

MLS:

The Columbus Crew beat the New York Red Bulls 2-0 last night in the first leg of the Eastern Conference finals. Kei Kamara and Justin Meram scored for Columbus. The second game is next Sunday night in Harrison, New Jersey.

NCAA:

In college men's basketball, Seton Hall outlasted Mississippi to take fifth-place at the Charleston Classic with a 75-63 victory yesterday. Isaiah Whitehead had 12 of his 17 points in the second half. Whitehead scored eight straight points down the stretch as the Pirates took control of a tight game and left here with their second straight win.

SMU held off Yale 71-69 yesterday. Jordan Tolbert scored five of his 17 points in the final three minutes, and Markus Kennedy had 12 points and 13 rebounds for SMU. Makai Mason led Yale with 24 points and seven assists.

St. Joseph's rallied past Old Dominion 66-64 in the consolation game of the Naismith Hall of Fame Tip-Off tournament yesterday in Uncasville, Connecticut. Shavar Newkirk scored 10 points, including the last-second game-winner for St. Joseph's. The final 3:21 saw three ties and three lead changes as the teams battled down the stretch.

Quinnipiac beat Holy Cross 62-56 yesterday. Chaise Daniels scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Giovanni McLean added 11 points and dished out seven assists for Quinnipiac, which controlled the boards 46-31. Holy Cross got 15 points from Matt Husek, while Karl Charles and Matt Zignorski added 10 apiece.

Fifth-ranked Duke is 4-1 after capturing the 2K Classic championship at Madison Square Garden.

Grayson Allen scored a career-high 32 points as the Blue Devils nipped Georgetown 86-84. Derryck Thornton provided 14 points and Matt Jones scored 11 for the Blue Devils, who trailed by seven at halftime before winning their second straight since a lopsided loss to second-ranked Kentucky.

In other top-25 finals:

— Malcolm Brogdon had 21 points and No. 6 Virginia won the Charleston Classic witih an 83-66 victory over George Mason. London Perrantes had 16 points and 11 assists for the Cavaliers.

— Josh Hart scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds as 11th-ranked Villanova hammered Akron 76-56. The Wildcats trailed by as many as eight before going on a 27-5 run bridging the two halves.

— Gabe York scored 18 points to carry No. 12 Arizona past Northwestern State 61-42. The Wildcats extended the nation's longest active home winning streak to 42 games.

— Jakob Poeltl delivered 32 points and 11 rebounds as No. 16 Utah beat Temple 74-68 in the third-place game at the Puerto Rico Tipoff. Brandon Taylor hit the go-ahead shot with 28.4 seconds left.

— Rapheal Davis scored 18 points and 21st-rated Purdue used a 15-2 spurt to pull away in an 85-70 win against Florida in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off title game.

— Angel Rodriguez scored 19 points and Miami knocked off a second straight ranked opponent by beating No. 22 Butler 85-75 in Puerto Rico Tipoff championship game.

— No. 25 Oregon topped Valparaiso 73-67 behind Dillon Brooks' 26 points and 13 boards.

MLB:

A person familiar with the decision has told The Associated Press that the Los Angeles Dodgers will hire Dave Roberts as their manager. Roberts is a former Dodgers outfielder who will be the first minority manager in the storied franchise's history. The 43-year-old most recently served as bench coach of the San Diego Padres. Roberts will succeed Don Mattingly.

PGA:

Kevin Kisner is a first-time winner on the PGA Tour after capturing the RSM Classic. Kisner closed with a 6-under 64 for a 22-under total that left him six strokes ahead of runner-up Kevin Chappell.

LPGA:

Cristie Kerr shot a final round 4-under-68 to win the last LPGA event of the year, the LPGA Tour Championship in Naples, Florida. She finished 17 under, while fellow American Gerina Piller and South Korea's Ha Na Jang tied for second at 16-under. Lydia Ko tied for seventh to win a $1 million bonus and become the player of the year. Inbee Park was sixth to capture the season scoring title and guarantee herself a spot in the LPGA Hall of Fame.
