Sports Report: Jays Tighten Series After Game 3 Ends 11-8

MLB:

Toronto bested Kansas City in game 3 of the American League Championship Series 11-8. The Royals still lead the series 2-1. The Blue Jays are at home tonight at 4:00. The Mets are in Chicago at 8.

The New York Mets say Matt Harvey should be able to make his scheduled start in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series against the Cubs in Chicago. He bruised his right arm when hit by a comebacker off the bat of Dexter Fowler in the series opener on Saturday night. Harvey allowed two runs and four hits in 7 2/3 innings in New York's 4-2 win before the Mets earned a 4-1 win over the Cubs to take a 2-0 series lead.

Tigers pitcher Daniel Norris says he kept pitching this year despite learning he had a cancerous growth on his thyroid. The 22-year-old Norris said the growth was deemed malignant, but he was told by a doctor that he could wait until the end of the season to have it removed. Norris went 3-2 with a 3.75 ERA in 13 starts for Toronto and Detroit.

The Toronto Blue Jays have banned the sale of canned beer in the upper deck at the AL Championship Series after fans threw them on the field during a ruckus earlier in the playoffs. Instead, beer will be poured into plastic cups. The Blue Jays made the change after some fans reacted to a ruling on a bizarre play in the seventh inning of Game 5 in the Division Series against Texas by pelting the field with cans.

Former American League Cy Young Award winner Barry Zito has retired, making the announcement through an article he wrote for "The Players' Tribune." The 37-year-old said last month that he planned to retire and turn his attention to his other interests. Zito went 165-143 with a 4.04 ERA in parts of 15 big league seasons, which also included seven years with the San Francisco Giants. He captured the 2002 AL Cy Young Award after going 23-5 with a 2.75 ERA.

NFL:

On Monday Night Football, Philadelphia topped the Giants 27-7. The Eagles have won two straight to move from last place in the NFC East into a tie for first with the Giants.

The NFL has suspended New York Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa for four games without pay for violating the league's personal conduct policy. The suspension stems from an incident last year when Enunwa was arrested for simple assault on his girlfriend at a New Jersey hotel. Domestic violence charges were later dropped in the case.

An MRI exam shows Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota sprained his left MCL during Sunday's loss to Miami. Tennessee coach Ken Whisenhunt says they will have to see how the rookie's knee progresses before determining if he can play Sunday against Atlanta. Whisenhunt said that Mariota was walking around just fine at the Tennessee headquarters on Monday.

The Seattle Seahawks are lifting the suspension of fullback Derrick Coleman imposed after he was arrested following a car crash. Coleman could play Thursday night against San Francisco, but coach Pete Carroll said the fullback has yet to be examined by team doctors following his involvement in the crash. Coleman was suspended last week after his arrest for investigation of vehicular assault and hit-and-run.

Johnny Manziel's roadside argument with his girlfriend could lead to punishment from the NFL.

Browns coach Mike Pettine says that the league is investigating the high-profile backup quarterback's domestic dispute last week. Manziel was questioned by police in Avon, Ohio, after his girlfriend claimed he was physical with her when the two had a heated disagreement while driving on an interstate highway.

Colleen Crowley can be heard telling police on a dash-cam video that Manziel was physical with her, saying "he hit me a couple times." Manziel was not arrested. Crowley, who police said appeared intoxicated, did not press charges.

NHL:

In the NHL, the Rangers blanked San Jose 4-0 to end a three-game slide.

Oscar Pistorius:

Oscar Pistorius has been released from prison and placed under house arrest, according to a South African official. The correctional services department had originally said Pistorius would be released from the Pretoria jail on Tuesday, in line with a decision by a parole board at the prison. The double-amputee Olympic runner was acquitted of murder last year for the Valentine's Day shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, but prosecutors have appealed the trial verdict of culpable homicide, or manslaughter, and will seek a murder conviction again in November.

NBA:

In NBA preseason play, Boston beat Brooklyn 111-105, Houston trumped New Orleans 120-100, the Lakers squeaked by Portland 104-102, Cleveland defeated Dallas 103-97, and it was Charlotte over Chicago 94-86.

WNBA:

Madison Square Garden Chairman James Dolan says he has "a tremendous amount of respect" for Isiah Thomas' "skill and his talent." Dolan hired Thomas as the team president of the WNBA's New York Liberty in May, seven years after the Hall of Famer's unsuccessful stint as Knicks president ended. A lawsuit brought by former team employee Anucha Browne Sanders alleging that she was sexually harassed by Thomas cost MSG $11.6 million.

Fantasy Sports:

DraftKings says a law firm hired to investigate claims an employee used valuable inside information to win a $350,000 second-place prize on a competing daily fantasy sports site contest confirms that didn't and couldn't have happened. The Boston-based company says it would have been impossible for the employee to use the information to win on FanDuel because he didn't receive the helpful data until after that site's contest closed.
