Sports Report: Giants Top Buffalo 24-10; Postseason Baseball Starts Tomorrow

NFL:

In the NFL, the Jets beat Miami 27-14, the Giants topped Buffalo 24-10, Carolina bested Tampa Bay 37-23, Atlanta beat Houston 48-21, Indianapolis won against Jacksonville 16-13 in overtime, Cincinnati beat Kansas City 36-21, Chicago defeated Oakland 22-20, Washington bested Philadelphia 23-20, Green Bay beat San Francisco 17-3, Denver trumped Minnesota 23-20, St. Louis edged Arizona 24-22, and it was New Orleans over Dallas 26-20 in overtime.

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, Baltimore topped the Yankees 9-4, Texas blasted the Angels 9-2, Detroit blanked the White Sox 6-0, Cleveland beat Boston 3-1, Kansas City won against Minnesota 6-1, Seattle edged Oakland 3-2, and it was Tampa Bay over Toronto 12-3.

In the National League, Pittsburgh shut out Cincinnati 4-0, Colorado bested San Francisco 7-3, Philadelphia trumped Miami 7-2, the Cubs defeated Milwaukee 3-1, the Dodgers doubled up San Diego 6-3, and it was the Mets over Washington 1-0.

In interleague play, Arizona beat Houston 5-3.

The postseason starts tomorrow. The AL wild card features Houston in New York to face off against the Yankees.

Several hundred fans of late New York Yankees Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra have gathered in northern New Jersey to pay tribute to him.The Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center in Little Falls staged a memorial event on Sunday. Among those attending was Berra's son Larry Berra, who shared stories about him and his life.

Berra was a longtime New Jersey resident. He died September 22nd at age 90. His namesake museum offers children's educational programs that focus on sportsmanship and social justice along with baseball exhibits and memorabilia.

NBA:

In NBA preseason play, Charlotte beat Miami 90-77, Toronto topped the Clippers 93-73, and it was Utah over the Lakers 90-71.

The Charlotte Hornets say forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist dislocated his right shoulder during Saturday's preseason game at Orlando. Kidd-Gilchrist is a key player for the Hornets, who were 28-29 when he played last season and 5-20 without him.

NHL:

In NHL preseason play, Washington tripled up the Islanders 6-2. Regular season starts on Wednesday.

NCAAF:

There are several changes atop The Associated Press college football poll. Top-ranked Ohio State received 38 first-place votes following its win at Indiana, but Michigan State dropped from second to fourth after blowing most of a 21-point lead in a 24-21 win over Purdue. TCU is the new No. 2, followed by Baylor. Utah is fifth, in front of Clemson, LSU, Alabama, Texas A&M and Oklahoma. Five teams received first-place votes.

NASCAR:

Kevin Harvick has advanced to the second round of NASCAR's playoffs with a dominating performance at Dover International Speedway. Harvick was mired in 15th in the standings and had to win to keep his title defense alive. He led for 354 laps and finished ahead of Kyle Busch. Carl Edwards also advanced, along with Joey Logano, Ryan Newman, Kurt Busch, Brad Keselowski, Martin Truex Jr., Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch.

The shocker was the elimination of six-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, who entered fifth in the standings and was the owner of 10 wins at Dover. His No. 48 Chevrolet was forced off the track for 36 laps with a torn rear axle seal, causing him to finish 41st. Jamie McMurray, Paul Menard and Clint Bowyer also were eliminated from the Chase field.
