Jason Day has won the PGA Championship with a record-setting performance that left him three shots ahead of reigning Masters and U.S. Open champion Jordan Spieth. The 27-year-old Australian closed with a 5-under 67 for a 20-under total, breaking Tiger Woods' major championship record for most strokes under par. Branden Grace finished alone in third at 15-under, one stroke ahead of Justin Rose.
Vicky Hurst won the W.B. Mason Championship in Brockton, Massachusetts, yesterday for her fifth career Symetra Tour title and first since 2008. Hurt closed with a 3-under 68 at Thorny Lea Golf Club to finish at 13-under 200, three shots ahead of Brittany Benvenuto and Mexico's Alejandra Llaneza.
Brooke Henderson has become the third-youngest champion in LPGA Tour history at 17 years, 11 months, 6 days. The Canadian captured the Cambia Portland Classic by eight strokes, closing with a 3-under 69 to finish at 21-under 267. The margin of victory is the largest in the history of the event and the biggest on the LPGA Tour since 2012. Pornanong Phatlum, Ha Na Jang and Candie Kung tied for second.
MLB:
In baseball, in the American League, the Yankees are back atop the AL-East after winning 2 of their 3 game series against the Blue Jays putting the Yanks a half-game ahead despite a 3-1 loss last night. Seattle topped Boston 10-8 in 12 innings, Baltimore trampled Oakland 18-2, Minnesota bested Cleveland 4-1, Houston beat Detroit 6-5, Texas won against Tampa Bay 5-3, and it was Kansas City over the Angels 4-3 in 10 innings.
In the National League, Pittsburgh bested the Mets 8-1, Milwaukee defeated Philadelphia 6-1, Atlanta edged Arizona 2-1 in 10 innings, Miami topped St. Louis 6-4, San Francisco blanked Washington 5-0, the Dodgers edged Cincinnati 2-1, and it was Colorado over San Diego 5-0.
In interleague play, the White Sox beat the Cubs 3-1.
NFL:
In preseason NFL play, Philadelphia topped Indianapolis 36-10.
Todd Bowles and the New York Jets would prefer Geno Smith wait until the doctors tell him he can throw footballs again. Smith was photographed by the New York Post playing catch with a friend outside his New Jersey apartment Saturday, two days after the quarterback had jaw surgery. Smith had plates and screws inserted into the jaw, which was broken by a punch from then-teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali on Tuesday.
Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan says defensive tackle Jarius Wynn could be lost for the season after a serious ACL injury.
Ryan called the injury "devastating" to both the Bills and Wynn, and said that Wynn will miss the season if an ACL tear is confirmed. Wynn was injured in Friday's preseason opener against Carolina. He played 11 games for the Bills last season, picking up two sacks and 17 tackles.
Wynn was entering his eighth season. He has 10½ sacks between Buffalo, Green Bay, Dallas, San Diego and Tennessee. Ryan also said running back Bryce Brown has a minor hamstring injury and may not play in Thursday's preseason game against Cleveland, though wide receiver Percy Harvin should debut for the Bills.
Buffalo also added kicker Dan Carpenter to the active roster, moving him off the active/non-football injury list.
Little League:
The Cranston Western Little League team is headed for the Little League World Series to represent New England. Cranston Western defeated Bedford, New Hampshire, 10-4 yesterday in the New England Regional final at Bristol, Connecticut.
Horse Racing:
Irad Ortiz Jr. became the first jockey in nearly two years to ride five winners on a single program yesterday at Saratoga Race Course. Two-time defending meet champion Javier Castellano was the last jockey to ride five winners at Saratoga, on September 2nd, 2013. It was the fourth career five-win day for Ortiz and first since November 15th, 2013.
The decision on if American Pharoah is coming to Saratoga Race Course for the Travers Stakes is still up in the air. The trainer says a decision won’t be made for another week.
WNBA:
In the WNBA, Atlanta topped Connecticut 90-77, Washington beat Minnesota 77-69, Los Angeles bested Chicago 76-64, Indiana trumped Phoenix 75-63, and it was Seattle over San Antonio 72-63.
NASCAR:
Pole sitter Matt Kenseth completed a dominating day of racing by taking the checkered flag in NASCAR's Sprint Cup race at Michigan. Kenseth led for 146 of the 200 laps on the two-mile oval to earn his third win of the season and third career win at the track.
Runner-up Kevin Harvick finished 1.7 seconds off the pace. Martin Truex Jr. was third, followed by Austin Dillon and Denny Hamlin.
