Meanwhile the Arizona Diamondbacks have used the first overall pick in the Major League baseball draft to take slugging Vanderbilt shortstop Dansby Swanson. He is hitting .348 with a .411 on-base percentage and 14 homers and 61 RBIs in 64 games for the Commodores this year after making a smooth transition from second base. Houston took LSU's Alex Bregman with the second pick, and Brendan Rodgers became the third consecutive shortstop selected when he was chosen by Colorado.

The Yankees selected right-handed pitcher James Kaprielian from UCLA with the 16th overall selection last night in the Major League Baseball draft. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound junior, has been rated by scouts to be a safe bet to develop into a mid-rotation starter at the big league level.

The Red Sox selected outfielder Andrew Benintendi with the seventh pick last night in the Major League Baseball draft. As a draft-eligible sophomore out of Arkansas, Benintendi had a breakout season, hitting .380 while leading Division 1 with 19 homers.

The New England Patriots have released linebacker Brandon Spikes as authorities investigate whether his Mercedes was involved in a crash. UMass football and Mississippi State have agreed to a three-game series to start at Gillette Stadium in 2016. The two following games will be in Starkville in 2017 and 2020.

UConn football coach Bob Diaco says he doesn't need UCF's permission to create a rivalry game with the Knights. Diaco last week posted a picture of a trophy he had commissioned for the annual game between the American Athletic Conference schools, which he has dubbed "The Civil Conflict." Above the trophy was a countdown clock marking the amount of time until the October 10th game in Orlando. The post created a social media stir, especially after UCF coach George O'Leary said knew nothing about any rivalry game with UConn.

Megan Rapinoe scored twice and Christen Press provided the game-winner as the United States beat Australia 3-1 in the Women's World Cup opener for both teams. Press put the U.S. ahead for good in the 61st minute and Rapinoe added her 31st international goal in the 78th. U.S. star forward Alex Morgan didn't hit the pitch until the 79th minute as she continues to recover from a bone bruise in her left knee.

Legal:

Oscar Pistorius will be released from prison for good behavior on Aug. 21 and go under house arrest after serving just 10 months for killing his girlfriend. Acting National Commissioner of Correctional Services Zach Modise told The Associated Press. "He hasn't given us any problems."

Yet three months after he leaves prison, likely for the comfort of his uncle's mansion, the double-amputee Olympic athlete will again face the possibility of a murder conviction and could be sent back to jail, this time for a minimum of 15 years.
