NHL:
In the NHL playoffs, Tampa Bay tripled up Montreal 6-2 grabbing a 2-0 series lead, Chicago topped Minnesota 4-1 giving the Blackhawks a 2-0 series lead, and it was Anaheim grabbing 2-0 series lead over Calgary 3-0.
NBA:
In the NBA playoffs, Washington beat Atlanta 104-98 for a 1-0 series lead and Golden State topped Memphis 101-86 to nab the 1-0 series lead.
Stephen Curry has earned some NBA hardware.
A person familiar with the decision says the Golden State Warriors point guard has won the league's MVP award. An official announcement and news conference are expected Monday, and Curry will be presented with the award on the court before Game 2 of the Warriors' series against Memphis.
Curry averaged 23.8 points, 7.7 assists, 4.3 rebounds and two steals this season. He also drained an NBA-record 286 3-pointers in helping the Warriors finish with a league-best 67 wins.
Curry captured the award over Houston's James Harden, Cleveland's LeBron James and Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook, among others.
NCAA:
The NCAA men’s lacrosse bracket is out and on May 9th UAlbany will see No. 8 Cornell at noon. On May 10th No. 2 Syracuse will face the winner of the Marist/Bryant preliminary game on May 6th. It‘ll be Marist’s first time hosting a NCAA tournament game.
The women’s UAlbany lacrosse team is set to play against Pennsylvania on May 8th. UMass Amherst will play Jacksonville on May 8th.
UConn is trying to entice fans to buy season tickets to sporting events through a prize giveaway. The school is giving away one prize every day this month to people who buy, football, hockey or basketball season tickets. Prizes include basketballs autographed by the national champion women's basketball team, dinner at coach Geno Auriemma's restaurant and gift cards.
MLB:
In baseball, in the American League, the Yankees swept Boston in a three-game series last night 8-5, Baltimore doubled up Tampa Bay 4-2, Cleveland bested Toronto 10-7, Minnesota crushed the White Sox 13-3, Detroit topped Kansas City 6-4, Houston beat Seattle 7-6, and it was Oakland over Texas 7-1.
In the National League, Washington blanked the Mets 1-0, Philadelphia tripled up Miami 6-2, St. Louis slid past Pittsburgh 3-2 in 14 innings, Milwaukee bested the Cubs 5-3, the Dodgers edged Arizona 1-0 in 13 innings, Atlanta shut out Cincinnati 5-0, and it was San Diego over Colorado 8-6.
In interleague play, San Francisco blanked the Angels 5-0.
Legendary singer-songwriter James Taylor has debuted his new song "Angels of Fenway" at the ballpark that gave the tune its name. Taylor's song was played over the public address system at Fenway Park last night before the Boston Red Sox hosted the New York Yankees. Taylor is a Boston native and longtime Red Sox fan.
NFL:

NASCAR:
Dale Earnhardt Jr. claimed his first Sprint Cup victory of the season by finishing in front of Jimmie Johnson at Talladega Superspeedway. Earnhardt led a race-high 67 laps and easily won when no one from a single-file line of cars could challenge him. It's the sixth career victory at Talladega for Earnhardt, but his first since 2004. Paul Menard was third, followed by Ryan Blaney and Martin Truex Jr. Pole-sitter Jeff Gordon was in contention until he was penalized for speeding on pit road, dropping him to 30th on the final restart. Gordon led 47 laps before finishing 31st.
Golf:
Rory McIlroy has won the Match Play Championship with a 4-and-2 triumph over Gary Woodland.
The top-ranked McIlroy began his busy Sunday by closing out a 22-hole victory over Paul Casey before posting a 1 up win over Jim Furyk in the semifinals. The Irishman took control of the final match by taking four straight holes on the front nine.
McIlroy was close to elimination several times during the tournament. He was 2 down with two holes to play on Friday when he rallied against Billy Horschel to win in 20 holes. McIlroy also was 1 down on 17 against Casey before extending his quarterfinal match.
Ian Woosnam birdied the first playoff hole to capture his first Champions Tour victory, the Insperity Invitational near Houston.
Woosnam closed with a 4-under 68 for an 11-under total, leaving him tied with Kenny Perry and Tom Lehman through 54 holes. Perry moved into the three-way mix with a final-round 66.
Boxing:
Floyd Mayweather Jr. has won the richest fight in boxing history, taking a unanimous decision from Manny Pacquiao (PAK'-ee-ow) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Mayweather used his usual skill to remain unbeaten in the most anticipated fight in recent years. He won comfortably on all three judges' scorecards in his long-awaited welterweight showdown with Pacquiao. Two judges favored Mayweather 116-112, while a third had it 118-110. The Associated Press scored it 115-113 for Mayweather.
Mayweather danced, ducked and peppered Pacquiao with enough punches to take the decision, while Pacquiao rushed forward and attempted to land combinations and big shots.
The pro-Pacquiao crowd booed the final decision and booed Mayweather, who said he will fight in September and then retire.
The 38-year-old Mayweather improved to 48-0 and dropped Pacquiao to 57-6-2.
Mayweather was said to be guaranteed $120 million from the bonanza $200 million purse that includes pay-per-view TV money. Pacquiao will get $80 million.
After the fight, it was disclosed that Pacquiao had injured his right shoulder in training and that Nevada boxing commissioners denied his request to take an anti-inflammatory shot in his dressing room before the fight.
Horse Racing:
American Pharoah has won the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby in front of a record crowd of 170,513 at Churchill Downs.
The 5-2 favorite was third as he approached the back stretch before passing Firing Line and Dortmund. American Pharoah angled outside and fought off a persistent Firing Line as Dortmund tired along the rail.
American Pharoah ran 1 1/4 miles in 2:03.02 and allowed Bob Baffert to celebrate his fourth Derby win, and first since 2002. Baffert is tied for second on the career Derby victory list.
Jockey Victor Espinoza won his second consecutive Derby, a year after being aboard California Chrome.
American Pharoah paid $7.80, $5.80, $4.20. Firing Line returned $8.40 and $5.40, while Dortmund was another two lengths back in third and paid $4.20.
Romance:
Skier Lindsey Vonn says she and golfer Tiger Woods have decided to end their three-year relationship. Vonn said on Facebook that the Olympic ski champion and 14-time major golf winner lead "incredibly hectic" lives that forced them to spend most of their time apart. There was no immediate word from Woods on the split.
