Sports Report: Manhattan And Qunnipiac Claim MAAC Titles

NCAA:

In men’s college basketball, in the MAAC tournament, Manhattan beat Iona for the second year in a row 79-69. Manhattan joins Northeastern and Wofford as teams yesterday to earn automatic berths in the NCAA tournament.

Kentucky remains the top team in the weekly Associated Press Top-25 poll after completing a perfect 31-0 regular season. The Wildcats earned all 65 first place votes and extended their season-long run as No. 1. The Wildcats can become the first team since Nevada-Las Vegas in 1990-91 to be No. 1 the entire season in next week's final poll.

In women’s college basketball, in the MAAC tournament, Quinnipiac topped Marist  for their second NCAA berth in three years 72-61. It’s the first time in nine years that someone other than the Red Foxes is headed to the tourney. UConn bested South Florida 84-70 for a bid in the NCAA tournament.

NBA:

Over to the pros in the NBA, Boston topped Miami 100-90, Denver bested New York 106-78, Washington won against Charlotte 95-69, New Orleans beat Milwaukee 114-103, Golden State defeated 98-80, the Clippers trumped Minnesota 89-76, and it was Atlanta over Sacramento 130-105.

NHL:

Over on the ice,the Islanders beat Toronto in overtime 4-3, Detroit won against Edmonton 5-2, Nashville topped Arizona in overtime 2-1, San Jose skated by Pittsburgh in a shootout 2-1, and it was Vancouver over Anaheim 2-1.

NFL:

ESPN reported that the Patriots have decided not to pick up Darrelle Revis' $20 million option, allowing him to become a free agent. Revis is a six-time Pro Bowl selection and a four-time All Pro.

Boston 2024:

The group spearheading Boston's bid for the 2024 Olympics has disclosed a list of salaries for its top executives and consultants, including former Governor Deval Patrick, who will earn $7,500 per day when he travels on behalf of the organization. Boston 2024 made the information public after a request for "transparency" from Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, who strongly supports the Olympic effort.

MLB:

In baseball spring training, Boston blanked St. Louis 3-0, the Yankees edged Tampa Bay 4-3, Miami crushed the Mets 13-2, Philadelphia slid past Baltimore 1-0, Atlanta beat Washington 2-1, Minnesota tied Pittsburgh 1-1, Detroit defeated Toronto 6-4, Houston beat Toronto 1-0, Arizona tied the White Sox 3-3, Seattle slid past Cleveland 4-3, Kansas City bested Milwaukee 5-4, Cincinnati beat the Angels 7-5, the Dodgers tied San Francisco 5-5, Texas beat Oakland 4-1, San Diego bested the Cubs 6-3, and Cincinnati tied Colorado 2-2.

Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee says his season and possibly his career could be over if he has to have surgery on his ailing left elbow. The former Cy Young Award winner is awaiting a second opinion in the injury.

The 36-year-old left-hander didn't pitch after July 31 last year because of an elbow strain. The elbow bothered him a day after he threw two scoreless innings Thursday in his spring training debut. General manager Ruben Amaro said an MRI on Sunday revealed "very mild inflammation.

Boxing:

The new prime-time boxing series averaged 3.4 million viewers in its debut. "Premier Boxing Champions" aired Saturday night on NBC with Keith Thurman's unanimous decision over Robert Guerrero and Adrien Broner's unanimous decision over John Molina Jr. It was the network's first major prime-time boxing broadcast in 30 years.
