NBA:
In the NBA, Oklahoma City beat Dallas 104-89 and it was the Clippers over San Antonio 119-115.
There was a lot of activity just before Thursday's NBA trading deadline. In one of the biggest moves, Phoenix is sending guard Goran Dragic to the Miami Heat for Norris Cole, Shawne Williams, Danny Granger and Justin Hamilton.
The New York Knicks have traded guard Pablo Prigioni to the Houston Rockets for guard Alexey Shved and two second-round picks, taking another veteran off their roster. The Knicks will get one of the picks in 2017 and the other in 2019.
Kevin Garnett is rejoining the Minnesota Timberwolves, the team that drafted him out of high school nearly two decades ago. The T-Wolves are sending forward Thaddeus Young to the Brooklyn Nets for Garnett.
The Phoenix Suns also are sending Isaiah Thomas to the Boston Celtics and another point guard, rookie Tyler Ennis, to the Milwaukee Bucks, along with forward Miles Plumlee. The Suns' major acquisition was Brandon Knight from Milwaukee.
The Oregon state medical examiner says former Portland Trail Blazers player Jerome Kersey died from a blood clot that traveled from his left calf to his lungs. The determination came a day after Kersey died at 52. Kersey had minor surgery on his knee last Friday.
Trail Blazers President Emeritus Harry Glickman said of Kersey: "It's been some 45 years since we brought the Blazers here, and in those 45, and the next 45, the Blazers will never have a better human being than Jerome Kersey."
NHL:
Over on the ice, Buffalo bested Philadelphia in a shootout 3-2, the Islanders topped Nashville 5-2, Vancouver skated by the Rangers in a shootout 5-4, Columbus defeated Pittsburgh 2-1, Florida edged Montreal in a shootout 3-2, San Jose won against Dallas 5-2, and it was Washington over Winnipeg 5-1.
NFL:
The Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers are planning a shared stadium in the Los Angeles area if both teams fail to get new stadium deals in their current hometowns.
The teams announced plans for the $1.7 billion stadium in Carson in a joint statement Thursday night.
Colts general manager Ryan Grigson says Indianapolis notified NFL officials about New England's footballs before the AFC championship game — and after Baltimore reportedly had issues with the Patriots' kicking balls in a divisional-round game one week earlier.
Grigson did not elaborate or say how the Colts were tipped off, only that he wanted to make sure Indianapolis had the best chance of competing on a "level" playing field. Coach Chuck Pagano said last month that he had spoken with the Ravens' coaches that week about a formation used by New England during its win against Baltimore.
The NFL has not provided an update on the investigation into why New England's game balls were underinflated. New England beat the Colts 45-7 and then won its fourth Super Bowl title.
NCAA:
In men's college basketball, Memphis beat defending national champion UConn 75-72.
In top 25 women’s college basketball, No. 25 Syracuse beat Boston College 73-51.
NASCAR:
Hendrick Motorsports swept the Daytona 500 qualifying races, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie Johnson winning their respective duel qualifiers. Danica Patrick needed a push from teammate Kurt Busch for the final two laps of Thursday night's second 150-mile Budweiser Duel to make Sunday's Daytona 500 field.
Golf:
Six players share the first round lead of the PGA's Northern Trust tournament at storied Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. The group includes Retief Goosen, Vijay Singh, Nick Watney, James Hahn, Derek Fathauer and Daniel Summerhays.
South Korea's Ilhee Lee took shot a 5-under 68 for a one-shot lead after the first round of the Women's Australian Open.
MLB:
Masahiro Tanaka has thrown 21 pitches in his first bullpen session of the year at the New York Yankees' minor league complex. Tanaka missed 2½ months last year while rehabilitating a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He returned for two late-September starts. Pitchers and catchers report for spring training today.
San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy (BOH'-chee) has undergone a heart procedure to insert two stents and was hospitalized overnight in Arizona. The team says its medical staff had been monitoring their 60-year-old manager's heart after he experienced some discomfort following a physical exam Wednesday.
Bochy, who turns 60 in April, has led the Giants to three World Series titles in the past five seasons.
Olympic Reunion:
On Saturday the 1980 Olympic Hockey team will return to Lake Placid for a special celebration.
Officials in Lake Placid are planning a 35th anniversary event to commemorate the Miracle on Ice at the 1980 Winter Olympics. All 19 players will be at the Herb Brooks Arena Saturday night according to ORDA Spokesman Jon Lundin. "This is the first time in 35 years that the entire 1980 USA Hockey team will be back in Lake Placid as a single group since they left this little town with Olympic gold medals around their neck.”
The multimedia program with the hockey team occurs Saturday night at the Olympic Center.
