Sports Report: UNC Hall Of Fame Coach Dean Smith Dies At 83

NCAA:

Hall of Fame coach Dean Smith passed away Saturday night at 83. The former North Carolina bench boss had health issues in recent years, with the family saying in 2010 he had a condition that was causing him to lose memory. Smith won two national championships with the Tar Heels along with an Olympic gold medal.

In top 25 women’s college basketball, No. 25 Syracuse beat Georgia Tech 65-60, No. 4 Notre Dame bested Boston College 89-56.

In men's college basketball, Evan Conti sank five 3-pointers and finished with 21 points to lead Quinnipiac to a 91-69 win over Niagara yesterday. Justin Harris added 15 points, James Ford Jr. had 11 and Zaid Hearst 10 for Quinnipiac. Emile Blackman led Niagara with a career-high 32 points and Matt Scott added 13.

Massachusetts beat La Salle 66-59 yesterday. Donte Clark scored 16 of his 23 points in the first half. Cady Lalanne finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds and Maxie Esho also scored 11.

Freshman D'Angelo Russell recorded his first collegiate triple-double by delivering 23 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds to lead No. 20 Ohio State to an easy 79-60 win at Rutgers.

NBA:

In the NBA, Oklahoma City topped the Clippers 131-108, Cleveland beat the Lakers 120-105, Memphis bested Atlanta 94-88, Chicago edged Orlando 98-97, Indiana squeaked by Charlotte 103-102, Minnesota won against Detroit 112-101, Portland defeated Houston 109-98, Toronto beat San Antonio 87-82, and it was Sacramento over Phoenix 85-83.

NHL:

Over on the ice, Dallas topped the Rangers in overtime 3-2, the Islanders beat Buffalo 3-2, Montreal skated past Boston 3-1, Philadelphia bested Washington 3-1, Winnipeg defeated Colorado 5-3, Nashville trumped Florida in a shootout 3-2, Chicago doubled up St. Louis 4-2, and it was Tampa Bay over Anaheim 5-3.

NFL:

The murder trial of former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez has been postponed for today with forecasters predicting a major snowstorm. It's the trial's latest delay due to winter weather. The trial is to resume tomorrow. Hernandez is charged in the shooting death of friend Odin Lloyd. He maintains his innocence.

MLB:

All-Star third baseman Todd Frazier and the Cincinnati Reds have agreed to a two-year, $12 million contract to avoid arbitration. Frazier has hit .258 with 73 homers and 235 RBIs in four major league seasons.

Closer Aroldis Chapman is the Reds' only unsigned arbitration-eligible player.

Golf:

South Korean rookie Sei Young Kim won the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic for her first LPGA Tour title. She holed an 8-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff with countrywoman Sun Young Yoo and Thailand's Ariya Jutanugarn.

The 22-year-old Kim shot a 1-under 72 in the completion of the delayed third round and closed with a 68 to match Yoo and Jutanugarn at 14-under 278.

Paul Goydos won the Champions Tour event in San Diego, the first full-field event of the year. Goydos shot a final round 3-under-69 to finish 12-shots under par, one in front of Gene Sauers. Three players wound up two shots off the lead at 10-under, Fred Funk, John Huston and Michael Allen.
