Sports Report: Lions' DT Suh Is Back, Harbaugh Heads To Michigan

NBA:

The Golden State Warriors improved their NBA-best record to 25-5 by crushing Philadelphia 126-86. Brooklyn topped Chicago 96-82, Detroit beat Orlando 109-86, Atlanta bested Cleveland 109-101, New Orleans defeated Phoenix 110-106, Memphis won against San Antonio 95-87, Dallas trumped Washington 114-87, the Lakers topped Denver 111-103, Utah bested Minnesota 100-94, and it was Portland over Toronto 102-97.

NFL:

Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh can play in Detroit's wild-card game after his one-game NFL suspension was reduced to a $70,000 fine. Suh originally was suspended for stepping on Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers' left leg twice in Sunday's loss to Green Bay for the NFC North title. Hearing officer Ted Cottrell heard Suh's expedited appeal and rescinded the suspension.

Former San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh was introduced yesterday as head coach at the University of Michigan, his alma mater. Harbaugh told reporters it has been a lifelong dream to be the head coach at Michigan as his ties go back to when he was a child. His father Jack Harbaugh served as an assistant coach for Schembechler when Jim Harbaugh was a young boy.

The New York Giants announced yesterday quarterbacks coach Danny Langsdorf is leaving the team after one season to head to Nebraska to become new coach Mike Riley's offensive coordinator.

New York Giants co-owner John Mara has announced that both head coach Tom Coughlin (KAWF'-lihn) and general manager Jerry Reese will be back for the 2015 season despite what he called an "embarrassing" 6-10 season. In making his decision Mara pointed out how the team never quit after losing seven games in a row.

NHL:

Over on the ice, Montreal beat Florida in a shootout 2-1, Nashville edged St. Louis 3-2, Edmonton skated past Los Angeles in a shootout 3-2, and it was Vancouver over San Jose 3-1.

NCAA:

Third-ranked Virginia and No. 5 Louisville were among Tuesday's winners on the top-25 men's basketball schedule. Anthony Gill led the 12-0 Cavaliers with a career-high 25 points and 13 rebounds in an 83-72 victory over Davidson. Terry Rozier scored 23 points and Montrez (mahn-TREHZ') Harrell added 16 to lead the Cardinals past Long Beach State 63-48.

Closer to home, Trey Davis scored 25 points and Derrick Gordon scored four of his 19 in the closing moments as Massachusetts held off Iona 87-82 last night. Meanwhile the University at Albany Great Danes fell to Niagara 65-47.

In top-25 women’s college basketball, No. 9 North Carolina beat Albany 71-56.

Notre Dame has won the Music City Bowl in Nashville, beating No. 22 LSU 31-28 on Kyle Brindza's 32-yard field goal as time expired. Irish quarterback Malik Zaire threw for a touchdown and ran for another to help the Irish finish 8-5. Tigers freshman Leonard Fournette ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns, and also returned a kickoff 100 yards for a score.

Freshman Nick Chubb ran for a career-high 266 yards and two touchdowns to carry 13th-ranked Georgia to a 37-14 rout of No. 20 Louisville in the Belk Bowl at Charlotte. Chubb allowed the Bulldogs to overcome the loss of quarterback Hutston Mason, who threw for 149 yards and a TD before leaving with blurred vision in the second quarter with Georgia ahead 20-7. Georgia's defense came up with four turnovers, with Dominick Sanders recording two interceptions.
