The New York Islanders have announced that the team is being sold to a former Washington Capitals co-owner and a London-based investor. They team says a group led by former Capitals co-owner Jon Ledecky and investor Scott Malkin has reached an agreement to buy a "substantial" minority interest in the team. Terms were not immediately disclosed.

MLB:

In Major League Baseball, in the American League, the Houston Astros beat the New York Yankees 7-4 last night. Brian McCann hit a two-run homer and Martin Prado had three hits for the Yankees, who wasted their first chance to make up ground during a six-game homestand.

The Los Angeles Angels beat the Boston Red Sox 4-3. Chris Iannetta hit his second double of the game, a tiebreaking drive in the ninth inning off Red Sox closer Koji Uehara. David Ortiz hit his 29th homer, a solo shot in the Boston first that increased his major league-leading total to 91 RBIs. NFL:

A person familiar with the Buffalo Bills sale timetable tells The Associated Press that the process is entering the final stage with prospective buyers asked to submit formal bids in two weeks.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the sale is being conducted privately.

A new owner is still expected to be identified by October, but it's not certain whether it will be in time to be approved by NFL owners at league meetings in early October.

The Bills are for sale after owner Ralph Wilson died in March.

The NFL and the players' union have agreed to increase the number of practice squad members from eight to 10 for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Also, the criteria for practice squad eligibility has been expanded.

NCAA:

UAlbany is expected to announce their new athletic director later today at a press conference. Former athletic director Lee McElroy retired at the end of June earlier this year.

Ohio State says quarterback Braxton Miller will miss the 2014 season after reinjuring his throwing shoulder. The school says he will require surgery.

The two-time Big Ten Player of the Year left practice in pain Monday after making a throw.

The senior and three-year starter partially tore the labrum in his right shoulder in a loss to Clemson at the Orange Bowl. He had surgery, did not face contact in spring practice and was held out of several practices this month due to soreness.

Redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett is Miller's top backup and will likely be the starter in the Aug. 30 opener against Navy in Baltimore.

Mid-American Conference Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher says the league's new 13-year media rights agreement with ESPN provides long-term stability to the conference. The new deal runs through the 2026-27 season.

Tennis – U.S. Open:

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic is seeded Number 1 for the U.S. Open, and five-time champion Roger Federer is Number 2, meaning they could meet only in the final. The women's seedings will be announced today, and the draw is tomorrow. The tournament starts Monday.

NBA:

NBA referee Dick Bavetta is retiring after a 39-year career in which he never missed an assignment.

Bavetta officiated a record 2,635 consecutive regular-season games after starting his NBA career on Dec. 2, 1975. He also worked 270 playoff games, including 27 in the NBA Finals.

Bavetta says, "It really has been a great run."
