MLB:
Major league owners have elected Rob Manfred as baseball's 10th commissioner, replacing outgoing Bud Selig in January. Manfred, who grew up in Rome, New York, is a labor lawyer who has worked for Major League Baseball since 1998. He beat out Boston Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner in the first contested vote for a new commissioner in 46 years.
The Royals still lead the American League Central by a half-game over Detroit after Kansas City scored five runs in the seventh inning to beat Oakland 7-3 yesterday. Max Scherzer struck out 14 batters in eight shutout innings to pitch the Tigers past Pittsburgh 5-2, dropping the Pirates 2 ½ games off the NL Central lead.
In the American League, a seven-run sixth inning last night sent the Boston Red Sox to their fourth straight win, 9-4 over the Houston Astros. Pedroia finished with three hits, Daniel Nava had two doubles and David Ortiz added two singles as the Red Sox improved to 8-0 in Fenway Park against the Astros.
Roger Clemens is being inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame. And the seven-time Cy Young award winner says he isn't worried about whether he will be elected to the national shrine in Cooperstown. The Red Sox honored him before last night's game against the Houston Astros, along with Pedro Martinez and Nomar Garciaparra. Longtime announcer Joe Castiglione was also honored.
Elsewhere Tampa Bay doubled up Texas 6-3. The Yankees had a day off.
In the National League, Washington beat the Mets 4-1, Miami edged Arizona 5-4 in 10, Milwaukee tripled up the Cubs 6-2, the Dodgers won against Atlanta 6-4, St. Louis slid past San Diego 4-3, and Colorado trumped Cincinnati 7-3.
AUTO-RACING:
Tony Stewart says he will not race Sunday at Michigan International Speedway, skipping a second straight NASCAR Sprint Cup race since striking and killing Kevin Ward Jr. during a sprint car event in Canandaigua, New York. Jeff Burton will drive Stewart's No. 14 Chevrolet in Michigan. Ward's funeral was yesterday in Boonville, New York. Stewart's dirt-racing career is on hold, and he could face criminal charges.
HORSE RACING:
Tomorrow at Saratoga Race Course, the Grade II Knob Creek Lake Placid for $300,000 dollars starts at 2:10 p.m. and the Grade 1 Alabama for $600,000 dollars kicks off at 6:20 p.m.
NFL:
In preseason NFL action, Chicago edged Jacksonville 20-19.
WNBA:
In the WNBA, Indiana defeated New York 76-63.
Soccer:
The U.S. soccer team will face Ecuador on October 10th at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut, in its first home game since the World Cup in Brazil. The exhibition game was announced yesterday and will be broadcast on ESPN. Ecuador also played in the World Cup.
