Sports Report: Action In MLB And Moves In NBA

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, Mike Carp's pinch-hit single in the 10th inning gave the Boston Red Sox a 4-3 win yesterday for their second straight walk-off victory over the Chicago White Sox. Elsewhere Cleveland tripled up the Yankees 9-3, the Angels trumped Texas 15-6, Detroit blew out Kansas City 16-4, and it was Minnesota over Seattle 4-2.

In the National League, Atlanta beat the Mets 3-1, the Cubs bested Cincinnati 6-4 in 12, Philadelphia blew out Milwaukee 9-1, Pittsburgh topped St. Louis 9-1, and the Dodgers edged San Diego 2-1.

In interleague play, Oakland defeated San Francisco 6-1, and it was Baltimore over Washington 4-3.

Masahiro Tanaka has a partially torn ligament in his right elbow, and the New York Yankees are hoping their rookie sensation will be able to pitch again this season. Yanks GM Brian Cashman says Tanaka could return in six weeks, but didn't rule out the possibility of Tommy John surgery if the right-hander doesn't respond to a rehab program.

NBA:

The three-team trade that gave the Cleveland Cavaliers salary cap space to possibly land LeBron James is official. Cleveland sent guard Jarrett Jack and swingman Sergey Karasev to Brooklyn and center Tyler Zeller and a first-round draft pick to Boston. Cleveland acquired a future conditional second-round pick from the Celtics and the draft rights to forwards Ilkan Karaman and Edin Bavcic from the Nets. The Celtics will get guard Marcus Thornton from the Nets.

A trial that could determine the fate of the Los Angeles Clippers was delayed until after a deadline to conclude a $2 billion sale — and a scheduled NBA vote on the deal — but there is hope for more time.

Donald Sterling has vowed never to sell the team and he's trying to block his wife's single-handed deal with former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. Attorneys for Shelly Sterling have accused his side of stalling tactics.

Superior Court Judge Michael Levanas put off the next hearing until July 21 because two of Sterling's lawyers had plans for a vacation and a wedding anniversary. He set closing arguments for July 28.

That's well past the expiration of Ballmer's offer next Tuesday. Ballmer's lawyer, Adam Streisand, said outside the court that there's a provision to extend the deadline another month as long as progress is being made in court.

NFL:

They say it's more a concept than a plan but the Houston Texans and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo have developed a $66 million plan to demolish the historic Astrodome and replace it with a green space and "Astrodome Hall of Fame."

The Texans and the rodeo propose to have the project completed in time for the 2017 Super Bowl at neighboring NRG Stadium, the NFL team's home venue.

WNBA:

In the WNBA, Indiana squeaked by Connecticut 72-68, and Minnesota beat Tulsa 91-85.
