In the American League, the Yankees defeated Minnesota 9-7, Baltimore bested Boston 7-6 in 12, Oakland beat Toronto 4-2, Cleveland topped Kansas City 4-1, the White Sox edged Seattle 1-0, Tampa Bay trumped Detroit 7-3, and the Angels won against Houston 6-1.
In the National League, Washington beat the Cubs 2-1, Arizona bested Atlanta 3-1, Cincinnati doubled up Milwaukee 4-2, Pittsburgh tripled up Philadelphia 6-2, Miami won against St. Louis 8-4, the Dodgers topped Colorado 8-2, and it was San Francisco over San Diego 5-3.
American League manager John Farrell has selected Red Sox left-handed pitcher Jon Lester to the AL roster for Major League Baseball's 85th All-Star Game which will take place next Tuesday at Target Field in Minneapolis. This is Lester's third career All-Star selection.
The New York Yankees have bolstered their rotation by acquiring right-hander Brandon McCarthy from Arizona. The Diamondbacks are sending New York cash in the deal for left-hander Vidal Nuno. The Yankees announced the trade yesterday.
Derek Jeter will make one final trip to the All-Star game.
The New York Yankees shortstop has been voted to the starting lineup for the July 15 game at Minnesota. Jeter is hitting .273 with 23 RBIs in his 20th and final major league season.
Joining Jeter in the American League's starting lineup are Orioles outfielder Adam Jones and Baltimore designated hitter Nelson Cruz. Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista was the leading vote-getter for the second time in four years and will play alongside Jones and Mike Trout of the Angels. Oakland third baseman Josh Donaldson, Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano and Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera fill out the AL infield. Baltimore's Matt Wieters was voted the starting catcher but can't play due to injury.
The National League starting lineup includes two Brewers, third baseman Aramis Ramirez and outfielder Carlos Gomez. The rest of the NL starters are Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, Phillies second baseman Chase Utley, Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen and Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig.
Derek Fisher’s college baseball career ended at Virginia after competing in the College World Series, but the left fielder now joins the Tri-City ValleyCats after being drafted 37th overall by the Houston Astros.
Tennis – Wimbledon:
Novak Djokovic blew a 5-2 lead in the fourth set before pulling out a 6-7, 7-4, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 triumph over Roger Federer in the Wimbledon men's final. It's the second Wimbledon title for Djokovic, who also won it in 2011. Federer was trying to become Wimbledon's first eight-time singles champion.
World Cup:
In the World Cup semifinals, Brazil will face Germany on Tuesday and the Netherlands go head to head against Argentina on Wednesday.
WNBA:
In the WNBA, New York defeated Minnesota 87-80, and Phoenix squeaked by Los Angeles 94-89.
