Sports Report: Former Siena Saint Anosike To Play For The Celtics

The Times Union is reporting that former Siena star forward O.D. Anosike will play for the Boston Celtics on their summer-league team. The 6-foot-8, 239-pound Anosike made his professional debut in Italy last season where he led that country’s top league in rebounding at 13.1 shots per game.

World Cup:

The Netherlands and Costa Rica have advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals. The Dutch trailed 1-0 in the 88th minute before scoring twice in a 2-1 comeback against Mexico. Costa Rica beat Greece 5-3 in a penalty shootout after playing to a 1-1 tie. Today France will play Nigeria at 5 p.m. and Germany faces Algeria at 9 p.m. The United States resumes play tomorrow with a knockout round match against Belgium.

NBA:

Chris Bosh has joined Dwyane Wade and LeBron James in opting out of his contract with the Miami Heat. ESPN is reporting that Carmelo Anthony is planning to meet with the Chicago Bulls on opening day of free agency when the NBA’s offseason market opens tomorrow at midnight.

Jason Kidd could be the next coach of the Milwaukee Bucks if the Brooklyn Nets agree to a 2015 second-round draft pick in exchange for Kidd.

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, David Ortiz hit his 450th homer, a colossal three-run drive, and Dustin Pedroia had three RBIs during his second consecutive three-hit game to lead the Boston Red Sox over the New York Yankees 8-5. Elsewhere the White Sox blanked Toronto 4-0, Tampa Bay blew past Baltimore 12-7, Kansas City beat the Angels 5-4, Minnesota edged Texas 3-2, and Seattle shut out Cleveland 3-0.

In the National League, Pittsburgh bested the Mets 5-2, Colorado blew out Milwaukee 10-4, Atlanta edged Philadelphia 3-2, Cincinnati blanked San Francisco 4-0, the Dodgers shut out St. Louis 6-0, and it was San Diego over Arizona 2-1.

In interleague play, Oakland edged Miami 4-3.

Golf:

Justin Rose won the Quicken Loans National at Congressional in a playoff over Shawn Stefani. Rose two-putted for par on the final hole, while Stefani made double bogey. Both were 1-under in the final round and 4-under through regulation.

Bernhard Langer made a short birdie putt on the second hole of a playoff with Jeff Sluman to win the Senior Players Championship.

WNBA:

In the WNBA, New York edged Connecticut 67-65, San Antonio beat Washington 73-65, Phoenix defeated Tulsa 80-77, Atlanta bested Indiana 76-68, and Minnesota trumped Seattle 74-69.

Tennis:

Wimbledon resumes this morning following the traditional Sunday layoff. Men's third seed and defending champion Andy Murray takes on Kevin Anderson in a fourth-round match, and fifth seed Stan Wawrinka battles Denis Istomin in third-round play. The best matchup on the women's side has fifth seed Maria Sharapova against No. 9 Angelique Kerber in a fourth-rounder.

NCAA:

Union College Defenseman Jeff Taylor was 203rd overall pick in the NHL Draft this past weekend.
