NBA:
The New York Knicks officially get an NBA D-League affiliate team, announced yesterday in a press conference, the team will be called the Westchester Knicks. The team will play out of White Plains, New York.
In the NBA playoffs,
Miami squeaked by Brooklyn 96-94, winning the 7 game series 4-1,
San Antonio bested Portland 104-82, giving the Spurs the series win at 4-1.
Steve Kerr is the new head coach of the Golden State Warriors, agreeing to a five-year, $25 million deal. Kerr had been in talks with the Knicks about becoming their next coach since Phil Jackson took over as team president in March. Instead, he decided to accept the chance to coach a Western Conference contender in his home state.
Kerr spent three seasons as general manager of the Phoenix Suns before stepping down in June 2010. He replaces Mark Jackson, who was fired by the Warriors last week after three seasons and back-to-back playoff appearances.
NHL:
In the NHL playoffs,
Montreal outshot Boston 3-1, sending the Habs to the eastern conference finals against the Rangers,
Los Angeles beat Anaheim 2-1, tying the series at 3. The winner will face the Chicago Blackhawks for the western conference finals.
MLB:
In baseball, in interleague play, Masahiro Tanaka has pitched the New York Yankees to their first victory over the Mets since Jun. 24, 2012, they shut out the Mets 4-0, the Angels beat Philadelphia 3-0, and Kansas City defeated Colorado 3-2.
In the American League, Boston bested Minnesota 9-4, Detroit topped Baltimore 7-5, Tampa Bay trumped Seattle 2-0, Cleveland blew out Toronto 15-4, and it was Houston over Texas 5-4.
In the National League, Washington beat Arizona 5-1, San Francisco defeated Atlanta 10-4, Pittsburgh won against Milwaukee 4-1, and Miami blew out the Dodgers 13-3.
NCAA:
UMass Football has until the 2015 season to find a new conference home for the team.
Horse Racing:
Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome has been made the heavy 3-5 favorite for the Preakness Stakes, and he drew a favorable post position in the 10-horse field. California Chrome will break from the No. 3 post, which has produced 10 winners in the previous 138 runnings of the 1 3/16-mile race. Social Inclusion has drawn the No. 8 post and is the 5-1 second choice.
