Sports Report: Union Men's Hockey Wins First NCAA Championship; Bubba Watson Wins Second Masters

Over the weekend in men’s college hockey, Union College defeated Minnesota to win its first ever NCAA Division 1 National Championship, 7-4. The skating Dutchmen scored three times during a 1:54 span in the first period of their victory over Minnesota. The Gophers led 2-1 until Mike Vecchione, Eli Lichtenwald and Daniel Ciampini scored for the Dutchman. Colin Stevens made 36 saves for Union, which finishes the season 32-6-4.

Bubba Watson has earned his second green jacket in three years by taking advantage of a two-hole turnaround at the Masters on Sunday. Watson closed with a 3-under 69 for an 8-under total, three strokes ahead of Jonas Blixt and Jordan Spieth. Blixt was the only player to shoot below par in each round at Augusta National.

Los Angeles police arrested San Francisco 49ers linebacker-defensive end Aldon Smith at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday afternoon after he indicated he was in possession of a bomb. Smith was charged with a false bomb report. Smith was booked Sunday afternoon, according to LAPD Sgt. Michael Fox. Smith was charged with a false bomb report, which is punishable by up to one year in jail. He posted $20,000 bail Sunday night, according to multiple reports.

In interleague play, Cincinnati beat Tampa Bay 12-4, the Angels blew out the Mets 14-2, and San Diego bested Detroit 5-1.

In the American League, the Yankees topped Boston 3-2, Toronto defeated Baltimore 11-3, the White Sox edged Cleveland 4-3, Minnesota slid past Kansas City 4-3, Texas trumped Houston 1-0, and Oakland shut out Seattle 3-0.

In the National League, Philadelphia beat Miami 4-3, Atlanta defeated Washington 10-2, Milwaukee bested Pittsburgh 4-1, St. Louis topped the Cubs 6-4, San Francisco won against Colorado 5-4 in 10, and it was the Dodgers over Arizona 8-6.

In the NBA, New York bested Chicago 100-89, Toronto beat Detroit 116-107, Brooklyn topped Orlando 97-88, Portland defeated Golden State in overtime 119-117, Sacramento edged Minnesota 106-103, and it was Memphis over the Lakers 102-90.

In the NHL, New Jersey beat Boston 3-2, the Islanders bested Buffalo in a shoot out 4-3, Carolina defeated Philadelphia in a shoot out 6-5, Detroit shut out St. Louis 3-0, Tampa Bay slid past Washington in a shoot out 1-0, Ottawa edged Pittsburgh in a shoot out 3-2, Vancouver trumped Calgary 5-1, Anaheim topped Colorado in overtime 3-2, Nashville bested Minnesota 7-3,  and it was Phoenix over Dallas 2-1.
