Giants Earn First Victory, Finally

In the NFL, the New York Giants finally ran into a team they can beat, leaving Tampa Bay and Jacksonville as the NFL's only winless teams.

Eli Manning went the entire game without an interception and the Giants smothered Minnesota's offense in a 23-7 win over the Vikings at the Meadowlands. Manning threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Reuben Randle and was 23 of 39 for 200 yards. Manning entered the game with a league-high 15 interceptions.

Big Blue's defense allowed just 206 total yards, most of it coming in garbage time. Josh Freeman struggled in his Vikings debut, completing just 20 of his 53 throws for 190 yards and one interception.

Elsewhere, there have been a number of injuries in the NFL. Bears quarterback Jay Cutler will miss at least four weeks due to a groin injury. Colts receiver Reggie Wayne is out for the rest of the season after tearing the ACL in his right knee and Rams quarterback Sam Bradford is done for the season with a torn knee ligament.

Tennessee Titans owner and pro football pioneer Bud Adams has died at age 90.

In baseball, Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland is stepping down after eight seasons.

Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester will start Game 1 of the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals tomorrow night at Fenway Park. Manager John Farrell says he hasn't decided on his entire lineup, but designated hitter David Ortiz will start at least one game at first base when the series shifts to St. Louis for the middle three games.

Checking NBA preseason action, Toronto edged New York 123-120. It was Cleveland over Philadelphia 104-93. Dallas fell to Houston 100-95 and Chicago bested Milwaukee 105-84.

In the NHL, Colorado blanked Pittsburgh 1-0. San Jose Shut out Detroit 1-0 in shootout and it was Calgary over Los Angeles 3-2.
