In baseball, Toronto blanked the Yankees 2-0. The Blue Jays dealt the Yanks their fourth straight loss and dropped them 3 ½ games behind in the wild-card race.
Elsewhere, Baltimore beat Boston 3-2 last night. That left the Red Sox's magic number at three for winning the AL East.
Texas passed Tampa Bay 7-1. The Texas Rangers put a halt to their seven-game losing streak while moving back into a tie with Tampa Bay for the two American League wild-card berths.
Oakland moved closer to a playoff berth beating the Angels 2-1. The win gives the Athletics a magic number of six for claiming their second straight AL West title.
Detroit topped Seattle 6-2. It was Cleveland over Kansas City 5-3 and Minnesota fell to the White Sox 4-3.
In the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals are back atop the National League Central. Matt Holliday was 4-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBIs as the Redbirds ripped Colorado 11-4.
In a doubleheader Washington beat Atlanta 6-5 the first game and won 4-0 the second. Philadelphia took Miami 6-4. San Diego defeated Pittsburgh 5-2. Milwaukee beat the Cubs 4-3. San Francisco bested the Mets 8-5 and the Dodgers won against Arizona 9-3.
Matt Harvey will try to rehab his injured elbow without reconstructive surgery; a move the young ace hopes is going to keep him on the mound for the New York Mets next season. Tommy John surgery remains a possibility. Harvey will soon begin a throwing program designed to last as much as six to eight weeks. If he feels pain or other symptoms that hinder his pitching, he likely will need the operation, which probably would likely sideline him for the entire 2014 season.
Finally checking NHL preseason action, Boston defeated Washington 3-2. Buffalo took Columbus 3-1 and the NY Rangers topped Philadelphia 3-2.
