Red Sox Trump Giants 12-1

In baseball, the Red Sox beat San Francisco 12-1 yesterday. Stephen Drew and Will Middlebrooks each hit a home run. Jonny Gomes and Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove in two runs apiece. The Red Sox have won three of five and entered play in a virtual first-place tie with Tampa Bay in the AL East. The Red Sox will have a day off today before playing the Dodgers in Los Angeles tomorrow.

In the American League, the Yankees handed Toronto its 12th straight loss in New York, 4-2. Alfonso Soriano hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth on a night when Ichiro Suzuki got his 4,000th hit between the major leagues and Japan.

Seattle topped Oakland 5-3. Cleveland bested the Angels 3-1. Baltimore doubled up Tampa Bay 4-2. Detroit beat Minnesota 7-1. Texas passed Houston 5-4 and the White Sox downed Kansas City 5-2.

In the National League, it was Atlanta over the Mets 4-1 in 10 innings. St. Louis edged Milwaukee 8-6. San Diego slid past Pittsburgh 2-1. Philadelphia defeated Colorado 4-3. Cincinnati won against Arizona 10-7. The Dodgers beat Miami 4-1 and Washington took the Cubs 11-6.

In the NFL, New York Jets fullback Lex Hilliard has been placed on season-ending injured reserve after seriously injuring his shoulder at practice.

In the NBA, ESPN reports that Allen Iverson is prepared to officially announce his retirement in the coming days.

In tennis, four-time major champion Maria Sharapova pulled out of the U.S. Open on Wednesday because of a right shoulder injury.

Finally, Escapefromreality won the Albany Stakes at Saratoga Race Course for jockey Javier Castellano, paying $8.40 to win.
