It was a strange day in baseball Monday…

That was the sound of Chicago White Sox fans booing Alex Rodriguez’s return to the big leagues hours after he was suspended through 2014 by Major League Baseball in the Biogenesis case, a punishment he plans to appeal. Rodriguez and 12 other players have been given lengthy suspensions after an in-depth probe. All but Rodriguez have accepted their suspensions.

"I am fighting for my life," he said. "If I don't defend myself, no one else will."

A-Rod struck out looking in his final at-bat to finish 1-for-4 in the Yankees' 8-1 loss to the White Sox.

Elsewhere in the American League, Houston blanked Boston 2-0. Detroit doubled up Cleveland 4-2. Kansas City crushed Minnesota 13-0. It was Texas over the Angels 5-2 and Toronto edged Seattle 3-1.

In the National League, Atlanta defeated Washington 3-2. The Dodgers bested St. Louis 3-2 and San Francisco beat Milwaukee 4-2.

President Barack Obama is honoring former baseball players in the Negro League, a haven for African-American players who were prevented from competing with white players for decades.

Prosecutors have provided Aaron Hernandez's defense team with the surveillance video from a Boston nightclub where the former New England Patriot and his friend allegedly had a dispute a few days before the man's slaying. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to murder in the death of 27-year old Odin Lloyd.

Finally at Saratoga Race Course, Holiday Soiree won the Shine Again Stakes for trainer Todd Pletcher under jockey John Velazquez, paying $6.30 to win.
