In baseball news, the Athletics beat Boston 3-2 despite a stellar start by Red Sox rookie Brandon Workman. Workman took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning of his first major league start. Coco Crisp broke it up with a leadoff infield single.
Aaron Hicks had a three-run homer to help Minnesota top the Yankees 10-4. The Twins beat CC Sabathia for the first time in six years to take two of three from the Yankees.
And the Mets doubled up Pittsburgh 4-2. John Buck's two-run single highlighted a three-run first inning for New York.
Elsewhere in the American League, Cleveland beat Kansas City 6-4. Detroit shut out Texas 5-0. Chris Davis hit his 37th home run to tie the AL record before the All-Star break, and Baltimore cruised past Toronto 7-4. Tampa Bay blanked Houston 5-0 and Seattle topped the Angels 4-3.
In the National League, it was Washington over Miami 5-2 in 10 innings. Cincinnati doubled up Atlanta 8-4. Colorado bested the Dodgers 3-1. Milwaukee beat Arizona 5-1. San Diego cruised ahead of San Francisco 10-1 and the Cubs fell to St. Louis 10-6.
In interleague play, Philadelphia bested the White Sox 4-3.
In golf news, Kenny Perry completed a comeback from 10 shots down after the second round to win the U.S. Senior Open. Elsewhere, Phil Mickelson birdied the first playoff hole to win the Scottish Open.
Tyson Gay, who holds the American 100-meter dash record tested positive for a banned substance and will pull out of the world championships next month in Moscow.
Finally, British rider Chris Froome won the 15th stage of the Tour de France.
