The New England Patriots released tight end Aaron Hernandez less than two hours after he was arrested Wednesday. Hernandez is being charged with murder in the shooting death of Odin Lloyd, a semi-pro football player whose body was found about a mile from Hernandez's home. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty but if convicted could get life in prison without parole.
Moving over to baseball news, Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira is out. Teixeira will have season-ending surgery on his right wrist. Recovery time is projected at six months.
On the scoreboard, the Rangers won for the seventh time in nine games following a season-high six-game losing streak beating the Yankees 8-5. The Boston Red Sox beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3 for a sweep of the two-game series. John Lackey struck out a season-high 12 over seven strong innings and Daniel Nava drove in two runs. The Mets shut out the White Sox 3-0 after putting together a three-run fifth.
In the American League, Toronto blanked Tampa Bay 3-0. Cleveland bested Baltimore 4-3 and the Angels topped Detroit 7-4.
In the National League, it was Washington over Arizona 3-2. The Cubs beat Milwaukee 5-4. Philadelphia defeated San Diego 7-5 in 13 innings and the Dodgers doubled up San Francisco 4-2.
Checking interleague play, Miami beat Minnesota 5-3. Oakland shut out Cincinnati 5-0. Pittsburgh doubled up Seattle 4-2. Kansas City won against Atlanta 4-3 in 10 innings and St. Louis fell to Houston 4-3.
In tennis news, there were a few upsets at Wimbledon. Seven-time men's champion Roger Federer was stunned by 116th-ranked Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second round, losing the match 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, 7-6.
On the women's side, Maria Sharapova was ousted by a 131st-ranked qualifier. The third-seed and 2004 Wimbledon champion was beaten by Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal, 6-3, 6-4.
