WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update

The world of sports is taking the backseat to another tragedy as a massive tornado ripped through a handful of Oklahoma suburbs on Monday. Kevin Durant is among a group of sports stars and coaches who are expressing concern for the victims, posting on his Twitter account that he was praying for everyone involved.

Moving over to baseball news, in the American League, Vernon Wells doubled in the tiebreaking run in the 10th inning and the New York Yankees hit four solo homers in a 6-4 victory over Baltimore. Elsewhere, the White Sox dealt Jon Lester his first loss of the season and ended Boston's five-game winning streak by downing the Red Sox 6-4. Adam Dunn ripped a three-run homer in the first inning. Cleveland beat Seattle 10-8 in a game that lasted 10 innings. Toronto beat Tampa Bay 7-5. Oakland cruised ahead of Texas 9-2 and Kansas City fell to Houston 6-5.

In the National League, it was Cincinnati over the Mets 4-3. Miami beat Philadelphia 5-1. The Dodgers defeated Milwaukee 3-1. Arizona beat Colorado 5-1. San Diego doubled up St. Louis 4-2 and San Francisco shut out Washington 8-0.

Lastly, Atlanta topped Minnesota 5-1 in interleague play.

In the NHL playoffs, the Boston Bruins are heading to New York tonight for Game 3 and they are up 2-0 against the Rangers in the Eastern Conference semifinal series. Elsewhere, Detroit won against Chicago 3-1.

In other sports news, New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski underwent a fourth surgery on his forearm Monday and doctors believe his previous infection is gone.

Finally, the Dodgers general manager says manager Don Mattingly is "doing fine." There has been speculation that Mattingly's job was in jeopardy.
