WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update

In the NBA playoffs, Carmelo Anthony scored 28 points to help the Knicks stay alive in the Eastern Conference semifinals with an 85-75 victory over Indiana in Game 5 on Thursday night.

Reserves J.R. Smith and Chris Copeland each had 13 points for the Knicks, who trail 3-2 and will need a victory Saturday in Indiana to force a seventh game on Monday.

Elsewhere, the Spurs moved into the NBA's Western Conference finals after downing the Warriors 94-82 in Game 6. Stephen Curry finished with a team-high 22 points.

Checking the NHL playoffs, the Bruins beat the Rangers 3-2 in overtime and Los Angeles topped San Jose 4-3.

In major league baseball, in the American League, Seattle bested the Yankees 3-2. Lefty Andy Pettitte injured a back muscle before leaving in the fifth inning. Boston passed Tampa Bay 4-3. Will Middlebrooks had a three-run double. Texas cruised ahead of Detroit 10-4 and the Angels fell to the White Sox 5-4.

In the National League, the Mets defeated St. Louis 5-2. Pittsburgh won against Milwaukee 7-1. Cincinnati beat Miami 5-3 in a game that lasted 10 innings. San Francisco beat Colorado 8-6 and Washington overcame San Diego 6-2.

In other sports news, the Buffalo Bills have promoted Doug Whaley to general manager. He replaces Buddy Nix, who stepped down earlier this week. Whaley was hired by Nix three years ago and was groomed as his successor.

The Preakness goes off Saturday with a nine-horse field.

Finally, veteran soccer player David Beckham has announced he will retire from professional soccer.
