The Yankees facing a bit of slump fell to Tampa Bay 4-3. The Rays are now just 2½ off the Yankees in third place in the AL East and the Baltimore Orioles’ 4-0 victory over Toronto puts them only 1 game off the Yanks.
It hasn’t been good and it’s not getting any better for Boston. The Red Sox lost to Seattle yesterday 4-1 marking a season-worst seventh straight loss.
In the NL, rookie Joe Kelly pitched 6 2-3 effective innings and also doubled to lead St. Louis to a 5-4 win over the Mets.
Everybody’s hanging tight tonight, Yankees in Tampa Bay, Boston in Seattle, the Mets play in St. Louis.
Three-time champion Serena Williams waltzed into the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open with her first 6-love 6-love win, what’s known as a double-bagel, in 62 career victories at Flushing Meadows. On the men’s side both Olympic Champ Andy Murray and Roger Federer also advanced into the quarterfinals.
And as we preview the NFL season which begins tomorrow night, with all the news about the referees who won’t be on the field, there’s some equally surprising news about who will be as the Giants take on longtime rival Dallas Cowboys. Cornerback Michael Coe is not only the new guy in the secondary, the six-year veteran probably is the most unexpected starter for Wednesday's game. When the Giants reported to training camp, Coe was considered the fourth choice to start opposite Corey Webster. Projected starter Terrell Thomas aggravated a knee injury that sidelined him last year and has been placed on season-ending injured reserve. Former first-rounder Prince Amukamara suffered a high ankle sprain against the Bears and is out, and rookie Jayron Hosley is battling turf toe. It leaves Coe to make his first career start at cornerback against Cowboy’s quarterback Tony Romo.
