Vermont's largest electric utility is upping the ante on its commitment to getting its power from renewable sources.
Green Mountain Power has announced a goal of getting 100% of its power from carbon-free sources by 2025 and 100% from renewable sources by 2030.
GMP serves more than 75 percent of Vermont electric customers.
The utility hopes to achieve the goal by getting more power from local sources and buying more carbon free wind and hydroelectric energy.
The state of Vermont has set a goal of getting 90 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2050, including heat and transportation.
In 2014, Vermont's Washington Electric cooperative and the Burlington Electric Department reached the 100 percent renewable goal.
