Vermont Governor Phil Scott signed legislation Monday that permanently allows the mailing out of ballots for the state’s general election.

Governor Scott, a Republican, issued a statement saying he “…believe(s) making sure voting is easy and accessible, and increasing voter participation is important.”

The new law is applicable only to statewide general elections and he reiterated his request that the legislature extend its provisions to primary, local and school budget elections.  A task force will assess that possibility.

Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos, a Democrat, says the enactment of the bill “….will empower more Vermonters to vote, while preserving the integrity and security of the elections process.”
