Vermont Governor Discusses Gun Purchase Waiting Period Veto

Jun 12, 2019

After vetoing legislation to impose a 24-hour waiting period to purchase handguns, Vermont Governor Phil Scott said at his weekly press conference that he's not convinced the bill would prevent suicides or gun deaths.

Republican Governor Phil Scott says he understand and accepts that some people are disappointed with his decision to veto S.169. But he emphasized that he believes the legislation did not address the underlying cause of suicide and other acts of violence.  “The law that was brought to me that was passed by the legislature I just don’t think is effective. I don’t think the 24 hours is effective.”

Scott signed three gun control measures into law last year that included mandatory background checks and raised the firearm purchase age.
