Jack Eichel set up two goals in leading the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-1 win over Metropolitan Division-leading New York Islanders on Tuesday night. Jason Pominville scored the go-ahead goal 6:49 into the second period by crashing the net and redirecting Eichel's backhand centering pass from the left wing.
Mark Scheifele had two goals and an assist as the Winnipeg Jets beat the New York Rangers 4-3 Tuesday night. Jets defenseman Joe Morrow recorded his first goal of the season and Andrew Copp also scored for Winnipeg. Mika Zibanejad scored twice and Pavel Buchnevich had the other goal for the Rangers. Mats Zuccarello added two assists.
David Krejci, Danton Heinen and Brad Marchand each scored during a four-minute span at the end of the first period and the Boston Bruins beat the Blackhawks 6-3 to snap Chicago's seven-game winning streak.
Sergei Bobrovsky made 13 of his 20 saves in the third period to lift the Columbus Blue Jackets over the Washington Capitals 3-0. Anthony Duclair, Nick Foligno and Artemi Panarin scored for the Blue Jackets, who won their fourth straight and remained in third place in the Metropolitan Division, two points behind Washington.
In other Tuesday action on the ice, Anton Khudobin recorded his second shutout of the season and Tyler Seguin had two goals and an assist as the Dallas Stars beat the Florida Panthers 3-0 Tuesday night. Esa Lindell also scored, and Alexander Radulov had two assists for Dallas, which snapped a two-game losing streak and won for the sixth time in eight games. With Stars goalie Ben Bishop out, Khudobin made his third consecutive start, stopping 30 shots and winning for just the second time in six starts. It was the eighth shutout of Khudobin's career.
Andreas Athanasiou scored at 4:08 of the third period, and the struggling Detroit Red Wings beat the Nashville Predators 3-2 to snap a three-game skid. Luke Glendening had a goal and an assist, Nick Jensen had two assists and Dylan Larkin also had a goal for Detroit. Jimmy Howard made 32 saves. Viktor Arvidsson and P.K. Subban each scored a goal for Nashville, which has lost three straight.
NHL points leader Nikita Kucherov had a goal and three assists, Brayden Point added a goal and two assists, and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Calgary Flames 6-3 on Tuesday night. Kucherov has 88 points, including seven over his last two games after going a pair without getting on the scoresheet.
Teuvo Teravainen scored twice and the Carolina Hurricanes scored four unanswered goals in the third period in a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night. Micheal Ferland and Justin Williams also scored for the Hurricanes, who wrapped up a season-long five game trip. Curtis McElhinney made 25 saves.
In NHL news, Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin has been suspended one game for high-sticking Philadelphia's Michael Raffl late in Pittsburgh's 4-1 win over the Flyers on Monday night. The league announced the suspension on Tuesday following a hearing between Malkin and the league's department of player safety. Raffl and Malkin were tangled up in the neutral zone in the third period with Raffl engaging Malkin physically while Raffl battled for the puck. When the two players broke apart, Raffl punched Malkin in the back of the head and Malkin retaliated by swinging his stick in Raffl's direction. Malkin received a 10-minute match penalty for the infraction. The league called Malkin's swing "intentional." The Penguins host Edmonton on Wednesday night.
Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta is dealing with an upper-body injury and is out indefinitely. The 24-year-old played just 4:57 in a 4-1 win over Philadelphia before leaving the game. He did not return. Maatta has one goal and 12 assists in 55 games this season for Pittsburgh.
Boston Bruins leading scorer David Pastrnak will miss at least two weeks recovering from surgery on a tendon in his left thumb. General manager Don Sweeney says that Pastrnak was injured when he fell on Sunday night after attending a team sponsorship dinner. According to Sweeney, the doctor will re-evaluate the injury and the timetable in two weeks.
Alex Rigsby made 33 saves and Hilary Knight scored as the United States women's team earned a 1-0 victory over Canada in the opener of a three-game series between the rivals. Knight poked a rebound behind goalie Emerance Maschmeyer with 1:40 left in the second period to quiet the announced crowd of 9,036 at Budweiser Gardens in London, Ontario. The Americans have beaten the Canadian women eight of the past 10 times at major tournaments.

Gordon Hayward scored 26 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:50 remaining, and the Boston Celtics beat the Philadelphia 76ers 112-109. Al Horford had 23 and Jayson Tatum scored 20 and grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Celtics continue their dominance over the Sixers.
In other Tuesday NBA action, rookie Trae Young had 22 points and 14 assists, John Collins also scored 22 points despite foul trouble, and the Atlanta Hawks defeated LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers 117-113 on Tuesday night. The Hawks snapped a three-game losing streak despite a triple-double from James, who scored 28 points, dished out 16 assists and grabbed 11 rebounds. Both teams struggled mightily in the final quarter after an up-and-down track meet over the first three periods. The Hawks scored just seven points in the final 6:33 but managed to hold on. Taurean Prince delivered a key 3-pointer with 1:48 remaining, and Young darted past James for a layin and a foul that thwarted any hope of a Lakers' comeback.
Stephen Curry overcame a sluggish night shooting and made a pair of pivotal 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, Kevin Durant had 28 points and seven assists, and the Golden State Warriors rallied from behind for the third consecutive game and beat the Utah Jazz 115-108. Curry had 24 points on 8 of 19 shooting. The two-time MVP missed his first five shots beyond the arc and finished 5 of 14 on 3s.
Disgruntled star Anthony Davis scored three points on 1-of-9 shooting, outplayed badly by big man Nikola Vucevic as the Orlando Magic beat the listless New Orleans Pelicans 118-88. Davis played 24 minutes in his third game since his agent told New Orleans the six-time All-Star wanted to be traded to a championship-contending team and won't sign an extension with the Pelicans.
LaMarcus Aldridge scored 22 points, including San Antonio's final seven, as the Spurs broke a four-game losing streak with a 108-107 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. Memphis rookie Jaren Jackson Jr. had two free throws to tie the game with a second left. He missed the first, and in attempting to miss the second, banked it in, giving San Antonio the final possession to run out the clock.
In NBA news, the NBA says Los Angeles Lakers president Magic Johnson did not break any league tampering rules when he spoke about Philadelphia 76ers point guard Ben Simmons earlier this week. The NBA's relatively quick-moving investigation was initiated after it was revealed that Simmons wanted to meet with Johnson to talk about the art of being an elite point guard. Johnson complimented Simmons publicly on Sunday.
"I love his game. I love his vision," Johnson said.
But since that was in response to a media inquiry, the NBA says Johnson was permitted to make such comments. The Lakers have been fined for tampering violations twice since 2017, those violations costing the team a combined $550,000.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
In women's basketball, Rider defeated Iona, 75-64.
In top-25 basketball, Cam Reddish made a game-tying 3-pointer with 1:28 remaining before adding two free throws with 14 seconds left, and No. 2 Duke overcame a 23-point second half deficit to beat No. 16 Louisville 71-69 Tuesday night. After making just 2 of their first 17 in the second half, the Blue Devils got hot and shut down the Cardinals over the final 9:54. Zion Williamson had 27 points and 12 rebounds while he ignored foul trouble to draw fouls and make 8 of 9 from the line. Reddish added a couple of 3s in between free throws — the last two of which followed an official review of a play under Duke's basket.
In other T25 action, Kavell Bigby-Williams's tip-in at the buzzer lifted No. 19 LSU to a 73-71 win over fifth-ranked Kentucky on Tuesday night. With the game tied after Keldon Johnson made two free throws with 6 seconds left, Skylar Mays drove the length of the court. His shot missed but Bigby-Williams got the offensive rebound and scored to give the Tigers their first win over the Wildcats since 2009.
Markus Howard scored 36 points, Sam Hauser had 17 and No. 10 Marquette cruised by DePaul for a 92-73 victory. Howard went 12 for 21 from the field and 8 for 10 at the free-throw line in another impressive performance. He has scored at least 30 points in four of his last five games.
Jalen Smith scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half, and No. 24 Maryland used a strong defensive performance to beat 12th-ranked Purdue 70-56, ending the Boilermakers' eight-game winning streak. Down by eight at halftime, the Terrapins took the lead for the first time with 10 minutes left before pulling away. Maryland outscored Purdue 40-18 in the second half.
Cassius Winston scored 23 points to help No. 11 Michigan State beat No. 20 Wisconsin. In doing so, the Michigan State star outdueled Wisconsin's Ethan Happ, who scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
NFL
The Buffalo Bills have begun addressing their offensive line needs by signing Spencer Long to a three-year contract. The addition made on Tuesday comes a week after the New York Jets cut Long to free up nearly $6.5 million from next season's salary cap. The 28-year-old Long has 44 starts in 53 career games over five seasons. He spent his first four seasons in Washington, which selected him in the third round of the 2014 draft out of Nebraska. Long has versatility in having played both center and left guard.
Antonio Brown wants out of Pittsburgh. A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press the perennial Pro Bowl wide receiver has asked the Steelers for a trade. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to publicly discuss personnel matters.
In other NFL news, the Houston Texans have released veteran wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, whose 2018 season ended prematurely when he tore his left Achilles tendon. Thomas played seven games for Houston last season, making 23 receptions for 275 yards and two touchdowns. He was acquired in October from Denver.
The Raiders have had their first talks about returning for one final season in Oakland since the city filed suit over the team's planned move to Las Vegas. Oakland Coliseum executive director Scott McKibben said that he met with Raiders president Marc Badain last week about a lease for 2019.
Mississippi State defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons tore the ACL in his left knee while working out in Florida last weekend. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound Simmons, a potential first-round pick in April's NFL draft, released a statement on Twitter confirming the injury. He said he will have surgery early next week.
Republican lawmakers in Wisconsin concerns that former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is too controversial to honor, doomed a resolution recognizing Black History Month in the state Assembly Tuesday. The Legislature's black caucus had proposed a resolution honoring a number of figures including Kaepernick, who sparked anger for kneeling during the national anthem. He says his goal was to protest police brutality.

A person with knowledge of the negotiations says Jorge Posada has agreed to team up with Derek Jeter again, this time in the front office of the Miami Marlins. The person says Posada will work as a special adviser to Jeter, his longtime New York Yankees teammate and now Marlins CEO.
In other MLB news, outfielder Eric Young Jr. has agreed to a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles and will report to major league spring training. The 33-year-old hit .202 with one home run and eight RBIs in 41 games for the Los Angeles Angels last year. Young has a .245 average in 10 big league seasons with Colorado, the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Atlanta and the Angels and Atlanta. He led the NL with 46 stolen bases in 2013.
Cory Seager is running at nearly 100 percent and Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts hopes his recovering shortstop can get 50 to 60 at-bats during spring training. Seager was limited to 26 games last season and did not play after April 29. He had Tommy John surgery on May 4 and had arthroscopic surgery on his left hip on Aug. 7.
