Programming Notes: November 2019

Nov 1, 2019

November means food, friends and family. Thanks to your support, we ended the October Fund Drive (in just over a day!) and are devoted to bringing you the best news, political coverage and entertainment programming we can. We kick off the month with regular programming and shake things up a bit toward the end. We’re also gearing up for Metropolitan Opera season, which begins Dec. 7.

This month on Person, Place, Thing, host Randy Cohen speaks with Tensie Whelan, Massimo Pigliucci, Mary Darling, Tobias Frere-Jones and Leslie Vosshall. Guests talk about one person, one place, and one thing that are important to them. The result?  Surprising stories from great talkers.

On “The Academic Minute,” we’ll feature a university take-over week from Butler University.  Topics include artificial wisdom, tolerance on Facebook and helping children with hearing loss. We’ll also hear segments on why competition is contagious, the Sim(PLY) system and why 73 is the best number. Stay tuned weekdays at 7:30 a.m. and 3:56 p.m. to hear the latest cutting-edge research from the academy.   You can also find all the segments and more online at academicminute.org.

On Thanksgiving Day, we will air “Food Fights with Food 52” from the Selected Shorts Series. Guest host Robert Sean Leonard presents some comic food fights: "Breadman," by J. Robert Lennon, performed by Kyle MacLachan; and an excerpt from "Heartburn," by Nora Ephron, performed by Joan Allen at 9 a.m. Of course, we’ll play “Alice’s Restaurant” at noon, followed by Midday Magazine and an interview between Alan Chartock and Arlo Guthrie at 1 p.m.

Coming up at The Linda, WAMC's Performing Arts Studio: The Northeast Filmmakers Lab, Nov. 1 at 9:30 a.m.- Nov. 3 at 6 p.m.; The Furious Bongos Play Zappa, Nov. 6 8 p.m.- 11 p.m.; SONGWRITING WITH: SOLDIERS “In The Round,” Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. - 10:30 p.m., among many more. Visit thelinda.org for more info.
